DO GOOD. CAREERS WITH SERVICE ORGANIZATIONS (PART OF 2012 SERVICE WEEK) Monday, January 23, 5-6:30 p.m.
State Room East, Indiana Memorial Union
Representatives from five nationally recognized service organizations will speak regarding opportunities available to gain valuable work experience while serving a community in need. Identify how you can use your skill set in the U.S. or abroad, learn how to make yourself a competitive applicant, and explore the benefits of service. The hour-long panel will be followed by 30 minutes of networking.
Panelists from the following organizations will be present:
PEACE CORPS: Since President John F. Kennedy established the Peace Corps by executive order on March 1, 1961, more than 200,000 Americans have served in 139 host countries. Today, 9,095 volunteers are working with local communities in 75 host countries in the fields of Education, Health, Agriculture, Environment, Youth and Community Development, and Business. Peace Corps service is a 27-month commitment and the agency's mission is to promote world peace and friendship and a better understanding between Americans and people of other countries.
CITY YEAR: City Year is an education-focused nonprofit organization that unites young people of all backgrounds for a year of full-time service to keep students in school and on track to graduation. At City Year's 21 urban locations across the United States and two international affiliates, teams of trained young people called corps members serve full-time in schools for the academic year as tutors, mentors and role models. By focusing on attendance, behavior and course performance, which identify students who are at risk of dropping out, corps members are uniquely able to help students and schools succeed.
TEACH FOR AMERICA: Teach for America is the national corps of top recent college graduates of all academic majors who commit two years to teach in urban and rural public schools and become lifelong leaders in the effort to expand educational opportunity. Since 1990, Teach for America has grown to include more than 33,000 corps members (teachers) and alumni. We are now one of the nation's largest providers of teachers for low-income communities and at the same time we are building an ever-expanding force of leaders who work from inside and outside of the education system to ensure that all of our nation's children have the opportunities they deserve.
INDIANAPOLIS TEACHING FELLOWS: ITF is a highly-selective certification program that trains recent college graduates and career professionals to become high-impact teachers in Indianapolis and Northwest Indiana's urban public schools. Overall we seek candidates who believe that all students can succeed in school and who are ready to do whatever it takes to achieve that goal. We currently have more than 175 math, science, world languages and special education Fellows teaching in more than 70 schools across Indianapolis. ITF is affiliated with The New Teacher Project (TNTP), a national nonprofit organization dedicated to closing the achievement gap by providing excellent teachers to the students who need them most.
ACADEMY FOR URBAN SCHOOL LEADERSHIP: AUSL is a nonprofit school management organization in the City of Chicago. We are working to make education inequality a thing of the past by partnering with the Chicago Public Schools district to effect massive changes in Chicago's highest needs schools via our unique Turnaround process. As part of the Turnaround process, we specially train effective urban teachers in our Chicago Teacher Residency Program and place them directly into our new Turnaround schools.
