New Criminal Justice course Fall 2011: Defending the Accused

CJUS-P 493 Seminar in Criminal Justice: Defending the Accused

This course focuses on the role of defense attorneys in the American legal system. Perhaps more than any other member of the court work group, defense attorneys are polarizing figures. On the one hand, they are seen as the protector of individuals’ rights, as advocates for the underdog, and as protecting the innocent from the power of the state. On the other hand, defense attorneys are seen as lacking moral scruples, knowingly representing the guilty, and as actors for the state in encouraging their own clients to plead guilty. In this class we examine the basis of those conceptions and how they relate to the right to counsel. Generally, we will explore what the right to counsel means, how it is assigned, and how it is implemented. To the extent possible, this class will be conducted as a service-learning class. As such, you will work with different types of defense attorneys – private, public, assigned, and contract – on a project related to their practice.

*P493 is a repeatable course up to three times with varying seminars.

Fall 2011 Course Listing: “Mandir and Masjid at the Movies” (Religious Studies B-335)

This course carries either CSA or Global Civilization and Culture credit as well as A&H credit. “Mandir and Masjid” is a great introduction to Indian film, and discussions the day after the screenings are always very lively. The course gives students a theoretical framework for understanding the ways religion plays out in both popular and less commercial films in the subcontinent.

Course Description:

Mandir (temple), masjid (mosque), and for that matter church make frequent appearances in South Asian cinema, sometimes for surprising reasons. In this course we will consider the meaning of religion in South Asia using film as our lens to explore what John Booth calls the "ambiguity of the sacred-secular distinction in Indian culture." We will begin by reading and discussing two chapters on how scholars "read" film, with a bit of practice in class before our first film screening. Each week we will watch and discuss, in detail, one film. Our broad topics include partition, gender, myth, fundamentalism, and the diaspora. We will come to know a range of views on religion and its role in the lives of South Asians through film produced in India, Bangladesh and Pakistan, and our reading of critical articles for each film. The films include mythologicals, social commentary, and Bollywood blockbusters, all of which have a great deal to tell us about religion in South Asia. No prerequisites, and prior knowledge of South Asia, while helpful, is not expected.

Course Work Requirements:

Each week students will submit a 1-2 page response to questions raised by that week's material. Grading will be based on these papers (30%), attendance and participation in classroom activities (30%), and two term papers (40%).

Our in-class discussions will centre around the readings, and questions posed on OnCourse will help guide students' thinking about each piece.

Grad students interested in the course should contact me individually to discuss arrangements for taking it under an appropriate course number.

The American Graduate School in Paris

The American Graduate School in Paris (AGS) counts among its graduates, students who came to us from Indiana University. These were students who wished to pursue an American graduate degree while gaining international experience. I recently sent this information about AGS in Paris to Dr. Lochrie and said that I would pass it on to you as there may be other students from your program who would be interested in applying here too.

AGS is an independent, private, non-profit American institution of higher education based in Paris, France. The School of International Relations at AGS offers a two-year M.A. program in international relations and diplomacy.

The academic standard at AGS is high. The curriculum is both theoretical and practical, and students are required to research and write a thesis of 80-100 pages. French is not required for admission, but it is a graduation requirement and students study French with our partner institution, the Alliance Française, and some earn a recognised diploma in French language studies.

As well as earning an M.A. at AGS many of our students enrol in double degree programs that we have with partner universities:

• M.A. in Peace and Conflict Resolution at Arcadia University
• M.A. in Diplomacy and Strategic Negotiations at the Université de Paris XI
• LLM at the Université de Cergy-Pontoise

AGS draws students from around the world and the multicultural atmosphere in the classroom is a learning experience in itself. Of course, Paris is an ideal setting for the study of international relations as it is host to so many international organizations, NGOs and embassies, as well as being in proximity to other European capitals. AGS students take full advantage of this wealth of opportunity: guest speakers address them in class, visits are organized and internships are encouraged.
We find that students who have studied with us leave with a deeper understanding of world affairs, as they can now view them from a more international perspective and with a better comprehension of why others do things differently.

If you have students considering graduate school and who would like to add an international dimension to their studies please let them know about the American Graduate School in Paris (www.ags.edu).

Clients have included Youssou N'Dour, King Sunny Ade, Seu Jorge, Balkan Beat Box, Antibalas, Mariza, Ladysmith Black Mambazo, Salif Keita, Central Park SummerStage, Grand Performances (L.A.), Stern Grove (S.F.), Six Degrees Records, Nonesuch, Putumayo, Sony, Universal, and hundreds more.

about the publicist position

The publicist is responsible for researching media targets to augment our existing press lists; understanding and communicating the main story angles of our clients, presenting those angles in compelling ways to the press via telephone, voicemail, and email; recording notes of conversations in a contact management database; and, communicating with clients regularly about each project's success, challenges, and strategies. The ideal person likes to talk, thinks before talking, is energized by a fast pace, is proficient with computers (email, Internet, record keeping), and is motivated by our mission to connect people across cultures through music. The publicist meets weekly with our operations manager and has the support of our office manager and interns. This is a great position for someone who has settled in Bloomington for the long haul and wants to work in the music and/or global culture field(s) and likes a workplace that is fun but with high work standards. The position is available immediately, though we will work with the right candidate to schedule a mutually acceptable start date.

Interested applicants should send a cover letter explaining what experience and skills they have that are a good fit to hr@rockpaperscissors.biz.

Undergraduate Call for Papers

CMCL majors: if you are interested in this, you should contact a CMCL faculty member.

CALL FOR PAPERS

For issue 2.4 (2011) of Film Matters—a special edition edited by Grinnell College undergraduates—we are calling for undergraduate students to submit papers on the study and issues concerning film genre. Compared to the auteurist approach in film criticism, genre studies allows us to look at the significance of groups of films to—as Thomas Shatz argues--provide the most effective means for understanding, analyzing, and appreciating popular cinema. Such an approach sees moviemaking as a dynamic process of exchange between the film industry and its audiences, allowing us to think about a movie not just as an aesthetic object, but also as a consumer item shaped by the shifting demands of the mass market. While some of the founding essays on genre films condemn them as nothing more than conservative ploys by the mainstream to uphold the status quo, others show how films can use the tools of genre to a subversive end. Even the very taxonomy of genres and their permeability are still issues of debate within the field. Genre studies has primarily focused on Hollywood productions leaving unanswered questions about the international influences that permeate American film. Issues of transnational cinema and the development of genre mark another rarely explored territory. For this reason, we are especially interested in papers that focus on national/transnational cinema and its use of genre.

Possible topics:

 Genre and transnational cinema

 Genre and issues of sexuality/queer theory

 Comparative genre studies

 A single text as representative of a genre

 New genres, dead genres, hybrid genres

 Genre theory

 History of genre

 Representations of race and ethnicity in genre

 Examples of genre subversion

Calls for papers are open to any undergraduate student, currently enrolled at an institution of higher learning worldwide and working towards a bachelor’s degree in any field. Recent graduates are also eligible, providing they submit to a call the deadline for which occurs within six months from their graduation date. Any original piece of written scholarship, involving film criticism, history, or theory will be considered for publication. By submitting a paper for a call, authors are certifying that: (1) they are undergraduate students, currently enrolled at an institution of higher learning and working towards a bachelor’s degree (or they are recent graduates of six months or less from the date of the call deadline); and (2) their submitted essays are original pieces of written scholarship, authored solely by them, and have not been published in any form, in any publication, heretofore.

Submissions should be written in English and range from 2500 to 4000 words in length, with 3000 words being the ideal target. They should be scholarly in nature, with references to research formatted according to MLA guidelines (7th edition). Furthermore, they should make a well-supported argument and not simply report. Please limit your submissions to one per author, per call.

After a prescreening, submissions will undergo a blind peer review process, typical of scholarly journals. Referee comments will be returned to those authors who progress beyond the prescreening; unfortunately, due to the high number of submissions, the editorial board is unable to provide comments to those papers that do not make it past this point. Authors of accepted papers will be expected to work closely with the FM editorial board to revise their pieces prior to publication. Please include a cover sheet, which includes the author’s name, title of essay, institutional affiliation, and contact information; all other identifying information should be removed from the body of the text, in order to aid the blind peer review process.

Please email submissions (as Microsoft Word email attachments) and questions to: FilmMattersGenre@gmail.com

Submissions should be received by April 10th, 2011.

Join the College for Themester 2011: Making War, Making Peace

"It was my view then, and still is, that you don't make war without knowing why. Knowledge of course, is always imperfect, but it seemed to me that when a nation goes to war it must have reasonable confidence in the justice and imperative of its cause. You can't fix your mistakes. Once people are dead, you can't make them undead."
