Lecture topics will include:
• Advertising
• Public Relations
• Product Placement
• News Values
• The Changing Nature of News
• The Entertainment Industry
• The Media and Body Image

Career opportunities for graduating seniors with U.S. PIRG

U.S. PIRG is a nation-wide network of state-based public interest advocacy groups. This year we are hiring over 100 graduating college students to determine where this country is going; to reform our broken health care system; to make college more affordable; to work for more and better public transportation options; and make an impact on many other public interest issues. You may be familiar with the INPIRG chapter at Indiana University (www.inpirg.org).

I am emailing to ask for your help in identifying graduating seniors who might be interested in career opportunities with our organization.

You can read more about our jobs here: www.uspirg.org/jobs

I got my start with U.S. PIRG as a campus organizer with Ohio PIRG. Recent graduates from Indiana University include Josh Kline ‘09, campus organizer with NJPIRG.

I am making a visit to campus on the evening of Oct 27 to run an information session and then will be conducting interviews on campus on Oct 28. Students can sign up through the career services section. I would also appreciate your help in spreading the word about our interviews. We’ve received help from other faculty and student leaders by forwarding our job announcement on listservs, posting our job posting on department bulletin boards, and making suggestions of qualified candidates. Please let me know if you would be willing to help in any of these ways.

Thanks in advance for your support!

Oct. 16 underground screening

Hello all, this week the underground film series presents a selection of work by Emerson College professor Robert Todd, who has been making short poetic films since 1989. While he has no characteristic style, his work is always diffuse, elliptical, and suggestive, its effects based on implication rather than explanation. The screening will draw from a broad range of his films.
************************
The underground film series is sponsored by Indiana University's Department of Communication and Culture. All screenings are on alternating Fridays at 7 p.m. in room 251 of the Radio-TV building on the IU campus. All screenings are free and open to the public, and free parking is ample in the lot adjacent to the building, provided you clearly display an underground flyer on the dashboard of your vehicle.

IUB Law Day is coming Tuesday, October 20!

Tuesday, October 20 is Law Day at IUB. With a record 111 schools registered (so far), it will again be the largest Law Fair in the country! It is a rare opportunity that most college students around the nation simply do not have. Attending can give you a head-start and an edge on the competition. Questions? Contact HPPLC at hpplc@indiana.edu or call 812.855.1873.

Both events below are for ALL IU students, including freshmen and sophomores. But if you are a current applicant or a junior, you would be making a BIG mistake in failing to attend. BTW, casual attire is fine.

1. Panel Discussion, Q & A, 9:00 am - 10:45 am (quiet latecomers welcome) in Whittenberger Auditorium - IMU. Law School Deans from IUB, Iowa, Dayton, and Santa Clara will reveal the inner secrets of their admission processes: “WHAT REALLY WORKS IN A LAW SCHOOL APPLICATION!” This insider information is not available in stores! The panel is extremely informative, and always entertaining---so come early and come with questions.

2. Law Fair, 11:00 am - 3:00 pm in Alumni Hall.
Representatives from 111 law schools are here to recruit YOU! Ask questions about their programs, admission requirements, and your specific strengths (and weaknesses). Pick up material, forms, information (and souvenirs). Most reps are Deans of Admission, and making a good personal impression can be helpful in the admissions process. Don’t know what to ask? See our handout “Questions to Ask Law Schools” at , and will be available at the Fair as well.

Questions? Do not reply to this email, but contact the Health Professions and Prelaw Center by emailing hpplc@indiana.edu, or by calling 812.855.1873.

For detailed information, including a list of attending schools, and a handout with suggested questions to ask, see: http://www.hpplc.indiana.edu/law/law-lawday.shtml.

SPEA - Scholars in Global Citizenship Application Deadline Soon

SPRING 2010 – Scholars in Global Citizenship - Korea
SPEA V450 / 13762 Topics in Public Affairs
Hutton and SPEA Honors Credit
Approved in all SPEA majors

Prospectus:
Globalization, which some sources continue to define largely in terms of economic integration and the free flow of capital, also involves the transfer of ideas, knowledge, and values. Students in this special course have a unique opportunity to test just how far and in how many areas of public life the forces of globalization extend. The course focuses on how globalization shapes and shifts resources, opportunities and creates challenges in societies that are rapidly changing. Societies in the midst of rapid change include, for example, those that have developed a large middle class in a single generation, have high rates of high-speed internet access in the home, have moved toward greater pluralism and political openness – among other trends. We expect that, in these societies, globalization’s impacts should be readily observable though not necessarily easily comprehendible. Hence, our primary objective is to improve our comprehension of the processes and outcomes of globalization in societies that are rapidly changing and developing – for example, in South Korea. This course meets in the second eight weeks of spring 2010. The course consists of a 12-day field module in Seoul, South Korea in May 12-26, 2009.

Course Requirements
Student groups will prepare for and lead discussion for each session of the course. Discussion leaders’ responsibilities include: 1) summarizing key points from the readings 2) developing and submitting to the instructor three discussion questions no less than three days before the class meets; and 3) assigning a short news article or equivalent article to fellow students on an aspect of Korean politics, business, or society that is relevant to the assigned reading. The course includes an exam at the end of the semester and a 15-20 page term paper due prior to the end of summer session 1. Active class participation is also required. Participation of students in debate and discussion is not simply desirable -- it is vital, especially for a seminar course like V450. Hence, a portion of your grade will be determined by the vigor of your participation in class discussions as well as your professionalism during the overseas portion of the course.

South Korea Module (May 12-26) Depart from Indianapolis

The study tour in South Korea encourages students to consider how globalization affects governments, businesses, community organizations, and ordinary people in South Korea. Korea is an excellent “field site” for studying impacts of globalization on state and society, with its open economy, and with new and growing challenges posed by this openness. Those challenges including managing ever-growing influxes of migrant workers, and balancing economic growth with environmental protection. Students are encouraged to consider how Korea is developing governance institutions – both in the public and nonprofit areas – to manage globalization. Korea’s goal is to ensure that these institutions catch up with the nation’s already strong and vibrant economy. A study tour in Korea will focus on key public affairs and nonprofit sector issues relevant to Korea and to the Korea-US relationship.

Prestigious Yonsei University serves as the institutional base for the SGCP in Korea. The Division of International Education and Exchange, which handles Yonsei University’s partnership agreements worldwide, will be the primary point of contact for SPEA. Seoul-based Yonsei, which is among the very top universities in Asia, boasts 502 partner universities in 56 countries around the world. Its international student body and global worldview, coupled with its longstanding partnerships with SPEA, make it an ideal base for the SGC’s first program. Moreover, SPEA is proud that its alumni occupy high professorial and administrative posts at Yonsei. The course instructor, Dr. Matthew Auer, and the SGC co-director, Stephanie Lewis, will reside in the same dormitory as the students.

Course fee of $2900.00 includes round trip group air transportation from Indianapolis, ground transportation from and to Seoul from Incheon Airport, housing, some meals, all site module course materials, entrance fees and bus transportation for extracurricular group activities.

Kaplan Free Practice Test (GRE, LSAT, etc.)

On October 10th, Kaplan will be offering a campus-wide opportunity for students to take a free practice GRE, LSAT, MCAT, DAT and OAT administered under simulated testing conditions.

Kaplan’s Practice Test is a terrific opportunity for prospective graduate, law, medical, dental, optometry, and pharmacy students to answer a critical question, "If I took the exam today, how would I score?"

Last year, tens of thousands of Kaplan Practice Test participants assessed their test-taking skills while learning valuable strategies to help them improve their score on the real test. Since admission to law, business, grad, medical, dental, optometry, and pharmacy school is fierce, a high score on your entrance exam can give you an edge.

We would like to invite you to participate in the 2009 ‘Back to School’ Kaplan Practice Test taking place at Indiana University on October 10th. Testing will begin promptly at 9:00am. At the conclusion of each test, one of our expert Kaplan instructors will give a short workshop on test taking strategies and answer any questions. Test scores will then be returned to students later that day from 3:00 pm to 4:00 pm. At this time, students will receive individualized feedback on their performance and will have a one on one consultation with a Kaplan expert to discuss their test results, any questions they may have.

To register for Kaplan’s Practice Test, you may call 1-800-KAP-TEST today or visit us online at www.kaptest.com/practice.

Are you thinking about an MBA? Take a GMAT Practice Test via our Live Online student interface. Visit www.kaptest.com for more details!

We look forward to providing you with this valuable service.

Spaces still available in Journalism Fall 2009 2nd 8 week course

Just a reminder that the following 2nd 8 week course in Journalism has plenty of available seats.

The course, JOUR-C 201, Hot Topics in Journalism, does not count in the Journalism major. It is designed for non-journalism students. If a student has taken "Hot Topics" before, then they should not re-take it as the course will be a course repeat. I'd be glad to answer student or advisor questions.

Please let me know if you have questions. Also, Ms. Linda Long, Student Services Assistant, is the primary contact for questions about the course. Please call her at 855-9248, e-mail ljlong@indiana.edu.

Thank you for sharing the information with your students.

Jean Person, Recorder
School of Journalism
E-mail: jperson@indiana.edu
Phone: (812) 855-1698

JOUR-C201: Hot topics in journalism. Does not count in Journalism degree, for non-majors. 2nd 8 week course. 3 credits.

TWO CLASSES:
7644, 6-8 pm, MW, Woodburn 100, Instructor Jeff Cannon.
9556, 5:45-7:45 pm, TR, Ernie Pyle hall 220, Instructor Curt Wellman

Do the media occupy a "hot" space in audiences' everyday lives? Without
the media, how do we come to know the "who, what, where, when, and why"
of newsworthy people and controversies in politics, economics, and
entertainment?

The colorful images and words of newspapers, television news and online
journalism have created a shared media culture with audiences across
the world. Many people encounter the media in airports, cafes,
classrooms, living rooms, gyms and in their cars. In the United States,
it has become increasingly difficult to avoid or escape media. In this
course, we will go behind the curtains of online information, newspaper
pages, and television screens to gain a better understanding of how
media shape the reality that we sometimes take for granted. This
includes media coverage of war, politics and sports, and issues such as
media privacy and bias.

Although this is a journalism course, this is not a writing course.
Grades will be determined through a series of quizzes, a midterm exam
and final exam. Test material will be taken from assigned reading and
from lectures.
