Business Student Organization Activity Carnival

Do you know students who are interested in joining a business student organization? They are invited to the 2011 Kelley School of Business Activity Carnival, where they can learn more about the various student organizations the Kelley School of Business has to offer! Students can play carnival games, eat some popcorn, and get to know some of the club members at this event, which is open to all IU students. Students do not need to be an admitted Kelley student to attend! Contact Allison Frazier at agerling@indiana.edu for more information.

September 9th
1:00~5:00 PM
Hall of Honor (Kelley School of Business)

Getting the Most From the Activity Carnival

Preparing for the Carnival:
 Sign up at myINvolvement at IU. This page connects you to hundreds of student organizations and events on campus.
 View the list of student organizations attending the carnival under the Kelley Advising Tab on Oncourse.
 Visit http://www.kelley.iu.edu/ugrad/life/organizations.cfm for more information about each organization.
 Make a list of the organizations that interest you and questions for each.
 Prepare to discuss your interests, experiences, and why you want to get involved.
 Bring a pencil/pen, notepad, and a bag to store free goodies and handouts.

At the Carnival:
 Visit the organizations that interest you the most, but also keep an open mind and visit other clubs as well. Sign up for more information and find out when the call out meetings occur. Ask questions from your list.
 Play the games, meet people, and be yourself!
 Provide your IU email address when asked for contact information.

After the Carnival:
 Reflect on your experience and the impression you received from the student organizations.
 Ask yourself questions: How did the students interact with me and with each other? What are their organization’s values? How do those fit or not fit with mine? How can this group help me grow as a person?
 Write down some follow-up questions, and bring those to the call out meetings you attend.

BIOL L111 / L112 exemption exam information

The BIOL L111 and L112 exemption exams will be offered next Wednesday, August 31, at 7pm in Jordan Hall 124. If students are interested in taking one or both of the exams, the sign-up sheet will be available in the Biology undergraduate advising office (Jordan Hall A115) between now and next Tuesday, August 30th.

One very important change: This is the final time that students who have completed more than 50 IUB credit hours can take the exams. In the future, students with more than 50 IUB credits will not be eligible to sit for the exams. So, please let students know that if they were planning to take the exams in a future semester but will have completed more than 50 IUB credit hours at that time, they should not wait - they should take the exams now!

The exams are each 40 multiple choice questions (passing score = 24). Students receive 3 credit hours for passing each exam (unless they already have credit otherwise), but the exams carry no letter grade. Students can take each exam twice, which includes taking the exams at orientation.

Please note: some graduate/professional schools will not count test credit toward their prerequisites. Students should check with their intended school or with HPPLC to find out more information.

Proficiency and Placement exams in Central Eurasian Dept Languages

There is an important change in procedure this year for proficiency and placement exams in Central Eurasian Studies Dept Languages.

There’s a set date for testing this year – Friday, August 26th. Direct students to the exam registration instructions at our department website, www.iub.edu/~ceus. Registration is needed by August 25th.

We have a new language program coordinator (Asst Prof Oner Ozcelik) whose arrival is delayed. He replaces Ms. Beatrix Burghardt who has served CEUS admirably for many years. Bea will start off the semester for us. We don’t know if one-day testing is a one-time change or will become a permanent change.

The August 26th placement exams are for students who may have lived or studied abroad or otherwise haven’t previously studied the language in CEUS and are unsure which level is appropriate for them.

The August 26th exam is not needed for continuing students who are moving in regular progression through a CEUS language. We’ll still do our usual testing at the first day of class for all students in our intermediate and advanced level classes to insure they are properly placed.

CEUS languages include:
Dari
Estonian
Finnish
Hungarian
Kazakh
Mongolian
Pashto
Persian
Tibetan
Turkish
Uyghur
Uzbek
Exams may be possible in additional languages

Please announce to your best and brightest students and encourage them to attend one of two information meetings about the Rhodes, Marshall, Churchill, and Mitchell scholarships and the IU nomination process for each. These scholarships support study at one or more British or Irish universities and are among the most prestigious graduate scholarships offered to American students.

The two meetings are scheduled for Friday, Sept. 2, 3:00 - 4:00 p.m., and Tuesday, Sept. 6, 4:00-5:00 p.m., in the Great Room of the Hutton Honors College, 811 E. Seventh, Indiana University, Bloomington, Ind.

The Rhodes, Marshall, Churchill, and Mitchell scholarships require candidates to be nominated by their U.S. universities or colleges. To be considered for nomination by Indiana University in fall 2011, an IU student must submit an application to the IU nominating committee by Thursday, Sept. 15, 2011. IU interviews will be scheduled for Monday, Sept. 19, in Bloomington.

The IU committee strongly encourages students interested in any of these scholarships to work on their applications and talk with potential referees as soon as possible.

The IU application consists of
• a 750-word personal statement;
• a 500-word statement on the student’s reasons for studying in the UK and/or Ireland;
• a 500-word statement on the student’s proposed academic program;
• a list of activities and honors; and
• three references (at least two of which must be from faculty and at least one of which must be from someone familiar with the student’s extracurricular activity and leadership).

(The national applications require additional materials and letters of recommendation.)

Students who have questions regarding the scholarships or possible programs of study should be encouraged to attend an information meeting or, if they are unable to attend, to contact Trevor R. Brown (brownt@indiana.edu), the chair of the nominating committee, or Paul Fogleman (International Affairs, 201 N. Indiana Ave., 855-3948, pfoglema@indiana.edu). Students should submit their application materials to Mr. Fogleman by Thursday, Sept. 15.

Below is a brief summary of the key requirements for each scholarship. For full and current information, students should review the scholarship websites. Please note that applicants must be U.S. citizens and to be considered for nomination by IU have a minimum grade point average of 3.70.

Interesting Course for Fall: REL-B 335 Mandir (Temple) and Masjid (Mosque) at the Movies

From Professor Manring in Religious Studies:

I've still got plenty of room in my exciting class on South Asian (think Bollywood!) cinema, B335, Mandir (temple) and Masjid (mosque) at the movies. Last time I taught the class a number of freshmen enrolled, and they did very well. Please feel free to contact me with any questions. And by the way, not very many of the movies will actually take up the whole 3 hours allotted on Wednesday evenings.

Religious Studies B335: Mandir and Masjid at the Movies
3 credits (CSA or Global Civilization and Culture credit; A&H credit) Tuesday/Thursday, 1:00 - 2:15 p.m., BH245 Wednesday 5:45 - 8:45 p.m., WH 121 Professor Rebecca J. Manring
213 Sycamore, rmanring@indiana.edu, 855-6756

"Mandir and Masjid" is a great introduction to Indian film, and discussions the day after the screenings are always very lively. The course gives students a nice introduction to cinema in the Indian Subcontinent using a theoretical framework for understanding the ways religion plays out in both popular and less commercial films.
Each week we will watch and discuss, in detail, one film. Our broad topics include partition, gender, myth, fundamentalism, and the diaspora. We will come to know a range of views on religion and its role in the lives of South Asians through film produced in India, Bangladesh and Pakistan, and our reading of critical articles for each film. The films include mythologicals, social commentary, and Bollywood blockbusters, all of which have a great deal to tell us about religion in South Asia. No prerequisites or prior knowledge of South Asia needed.
