Summer Session II 2011
A new Critical Approaches course: COLL-C 103 14338 Contemporary World Cinema (carries A & H distribution credit) (3 cr.) Prof. Justyna Beinek, Slavic Languages and Literatures 4:00-6:00PM MW Class meetings 6:15-8:15PM MW Film Screenings
This class will explore some of the most critically acclaimed and commercially successful international feature films of the past decade.
We will watch movies that come from around the globe and represent countries from France, Germany, Austria, Great Britain, and Spain to Poland and Russia to Japan to South Africa to Mexico and Argentina. We will learn how to approach films critically in academic and "private" movie-watching contexts; we will discuss different ways of analyzing movies and will interpret class films from various theoretical standpoints.
The films' thematic concerns range from the depiction of everyday life in present-day South Africa (Tsotsi, dir. Gavin Hood, 2005) and India (Slumdog Millionaire, dir. Danny Boyle, Loveleen Tandan, 2008) to communist East Germany (Lives of Others, dir. Florian Henckel von Donnersmarck, 2006); from an analysis of sources of violence and terror (The White Ribbon, dir. Michael Haneke, 2009) to a meditation on respect for the dead (Departures, dir. Yojiro Takita, 2008); from the tragic yet life-affirming Holocaust story (The Pianist, dir. Roman Polanski, 2002) to the buoyant "make-feel-good" movie about love in Paris (Amélie, dir. Jean-Pierre Jeunet, 2001) to a unique art project that consists of a 90-minute uninterrupted shot of the Hermitage gallery in St. Petersburg, Russia (Russian Ark, dir. Alexander Sokurov, 2002).
We will talk about the possibilities and limits of cinematic representation of cultures, nations, historical events, social issues, abstract ideas, collective and personal memory, gender, ethnicity, and/or private/public realms. We will analyze various movie genres:
drama, fantasy, comedy, literary adaptation, thriller, and others. We will discuss distinctive cinematographic styles that characterize contemporary world cinema. As we analyze films, we will also define our analytical criteria and basic film theory terms. To this end we will reflect on the aim of movie criticism, the difference between opinion and evaluation, various elements of film (narrative, characters, plot, point of view, mise-en-scène, composition, image, and sound), main critical approaches to film criticism, and ways of writing about film.

The Career Development Center and Arts & Sciences Career Services office is happy to announce that two of our career courses, ASCS Q294: Basic Career Development and ASCS Q299: Job and Internship Search Strategies for Liberal Arts Students, will now each have one section offered online during the first summer session of 2011. • Learn a structured, systematic method of career planning.
By the end of this course, students will understand clearly how academic choices relate to career options.

• Craft a targeted resume outlining relevant skills and qualifications.
• Write about past experiences in a cover letter.
• Apply interviewing strategies to market their skills and experiences.
• Network effectively.
By the end of the course, students will also be able to:

• Find and use the research tools available on campus and online.
• Prepare for a smooth transition from college to postgraduate life.
Regardless of where a student is in their academic or career development, the ASCS courses will provide valuable information that can be drawn upon at any stage in their future. Students can now set themselves apart from the competition, and do it from the convenience of any location. Please contact the Career Development Center at (812) 855-5234, or iucareer@indiana.edu, with any questions you may have.

Summer Course of note for enviormentally interested students
CLLC L230 Learning From Nature: Permaculture
•3 credits (Natural & Mathematical Sciences)
•Counts as a Collins seminar
•Cross-listed in the Department of Religious Studies
This course will count in the Religious Studies major or minor.
This course will be take place from June 5th through June 15th at the Lazy Black Bear Retreat Center in Paoli, Indiana (located about an hour south of Bloomington and surrounded by the beautiful Hoosier National Forest). The course will be taught by Religious Studies Professor David Haberman, Peter Bane, Keith Johnson (two of the best Permaculture teachers in the country and publishers of the Permaculture Activist, the only Permaculture magazine in North America), and Rhonda Baird (a talented young Permaculture practitioner and teacher from the forests of southern Indiana).
Permaculture, for those who know little about it, is a design technique for creating sustainable human communities that are in harmony with the natural environment. It is a rapidly growing and internationally recognized design system for creating better ways of living with our life support systems and with each other. It is a set of principles and techniques that aim to create ecologically sound, economically prosperous, and spiritually rich human communities. This course provides students with innovative conceptual tools and the chance to view the future from many different angles. This is a unique opportunity for hands on experience in a class at Indiana University.
Students who complete this course not only get three hours of IU credit, but also receive their certification in Permaculture, which enables them to practice and teach the art and science of Permaculture. Participants will be camping outdoors in tents or staying in cabins for the duration of the two-week course. The course classroom is a renovated barn, the Lazy Black Bear grounds are an inspirational site for thinking about Permaculture, and an expansive dining hall, solar shower facilities and indoor composting toilets are available (as well as ponds for swimming, forest for hiking, gardens for eating, and campfires for gathering around for music and conversation in the evenings). Students must complete an application and be accepted to register for the course. The application deadline is Friday, April 1st.
The application is available at: http://www.indiana.edu/~llc/academics/permaculture.shtml
This website provides further information about the course and has pictures from previous years. Enrollment is limited to 25 students. In addition to the 3 credit-hour tuition, a fee of $590 will be charged to cover transportation, food, lodging, facilities, and some course materials. Anyone wanting to know more about the course should email Prof. David Haberman at dhaberma@indiana.edu.
