Underground Film Screening

This week's screening with be work by several important women in experimental film--Gunvor Nelson, Janis Crystal Lipzin, and Marjorie Keller. Jeanne Dielman will be Feb. 15.

*************************************************
Marjorie Keller (1950-1994) wrote: “The current art of the film deranges its predecessors…It is in the work of women filmmakers of the avant-garde that the old forms are seen as if through an anamorphic lens.” Her films honor and challenge the traditions that she assumed when she learned filmmaking from Saul Levine, Sidney Peterson, and Stan Brakhage. Keller consistently explored the political implications of daily living and personal pleasures in her films. Tonight’s screening will feature a selection of her work from the 1970s and 1980s, as well as shorts by Janis Crystal Lipzin and Gunvor Nelson.
*************************************************

The underground film series is sponsored by Indiana University's Department of Communication and Culture. All screenings are on alternating Fridays at 7 p.m. in room 251 of the Radio-TV building on the IU campus. All screenings are free and open to the public, and free parking is ample in the lot adjacent to the building, provided you clearly display an underground flyer on the dashboard of your vehicle.

Toastmasters Call-out Meeting

Great Way to Get Involved on Campus

The Emerging Leaders Toastmaster's Club sponsored by the Office of Mentoring Services and Leadership Development will have ANOTHER CALL OUT MEETING on Monday January 28, 2008 at 7:00 PM in State Room West.

If you haven't come to a meeting before, be sure to not miss this one and discover for yourself if this is an organization that may be beneficial for you. The Toastmaster's Club is a terrific organization that will help you enhance and improve your listening and public speaking skills, speech delivery and leadership development. Commit to your future success by joining us January 14th in the Union for a meeting you won't soon forget.

Included below is a brief description of Toastmaster's International.

What is Toastmasters?

From a humble beginning in 1924 at the YMCA in Santa Ana, California, Toastmasters International has grown to become a world leader in helping people become more competent and comfortable in front of an audience. The nonprofit organization now has nearly 220,000 members in 11,300 clubs in 90 countries, offering a proven – and enjoyable! – way to practice and hone communication and leadership skills.

Most Toastmasters meetings are comprised of approximately 20 people who meet weekly for an hour or two. Participants practice and learn skills by filling a meeting role, ranging from giving a prepared speech or an impromptu one to serving as timer, evaluator or grammarian. There is no instructor; instead, each speech and meeting is critiqued by a member in a positive manner, focusing on what was done right and what could be improved.

Morris K . Udall Foundation 2008 Undergraduate Scholarship

Morris Udall Foundation Scholarship for Environmental Policy/Studies/Science Competition: http://www.udall.gov/scholarship/

Welcome back to the New Year of 2008, and a second semester of classes and challenges. Once again, I have the privilege of serving as the Indiana University Bloomington faculty representative for the Morris Udall Foundation Scholarship for undergraduates with an environmental orientation. This is an excellent opportunity for an IU student interested in environmental studies/policy/science to receive recognition both monetary and honors.

A few facts about the scholarship:

1. It is a national competition open to all U.S. citizens who are current sophomores or junior undergraduates.

2. It's purpose is to encourage greater involvement in environmental policy/science activities by today's young leaders.

3. 80 current sophomore or junior undergraduates are awarded merit-based scholarships of up to $5,000 (50 additional students receive honorable mention awards)

4. Each university can nominate up to six students for these scholarships which can be used for tuition, books, and room and board.

PLEASE NOTE: THIS IS IMPORTANT: Student nominees need not be environmental studies or science major. The key requirement is a demonstrated interest in environmental issues, particular policy issues. Representative majors have included political science, chemistry, biology, sociology, anthropology, public policy, and of course environmental studies.

5. Students must have at least a "B" average and be a matriculated sophomore or junior.

6. Awards will be announced April 8, 2008.

A few facts about the application process:

1. Student cannot directly submit their applications, but rather must submit their application, along with an "official" transcript to the campus faculty representative, me.

2. The deadline for internal submission is February 18, 2008... From the total submissions, six students will be chosen to be forwarded to the Foundation by March 4, 2008. In some cases, these students will be contacted before the submission for possible fine tuning of their application package.

3. The application forms and details about the program can be found at:

http://www.udall.gov/scholarship/

and

http://www.udall.gov/pdf/scholar/2008_Brochure.pdf

Helpful Hints from the website:

Frequent Problems in Applications
The Udall Scholarship is a highly competitive award. The principal reasons an applicant may not be awarded a scholarship are:

Coursework and plan of study unlikely to lead to career related to the environment, tribal public policy or Native American health care;
Career plans not supported by goals of the scholarship program;
Poor use of questions 2, 4, 5, 6, & 7 to reveal values, interests, and motivation;
Little evidence of leadership;
Lack of community involvement, particularly in the case of tribal public policy or Native American health care applicants;
Few activities or research that reveal interest in and commitment to the environment, tribal public policy or Native American health care.

You may request feedback from the Foundation concerning unsuccessful nominees and Honorable Mentions who are eligible to reapply their junior year by contacting your faculty representative, Prof. Edwardo Rhodes at rhodes@indiana.edu.

Nomination Procedures and Materials
Number of nominations. Up to six candidates can be nominated for the 2008 competition. Only nominations submitted by the official faculty representative will be considered for the competition.

Nomination Materials. It is the nominee's responsibility to provide the faculty representative with:

A completed, signed Udall Scholarship Application;
An 800-word essay, signed and dated;
A current official college transcript and transcripts for other colleges attended;
Three letters of recommendation.

The application must be submitted on forms provided by the Foundation to Faculty Representatives, on photocopies of these forms, or on copies from the Foundation's website. Recreated forms and attachments of additional information will not be accepted.

Submission of nominations
An Institutional Nomination Form [34kb PDF] is required for each candidate, signed by the designated faculty representative.

Selection Procedures
All complete and eligible nominations are reviewed by an independent selection committee. Applications are read by state and region. Scholars are selected on the basis of:

Demonstrated commitment to environmental issues through substantial contributions to and participation in one or more of the following: campus activities, research, community or public service; or
Demonstrated commitment to tribal public policy or Native American health care through substantial contributions to and participation in one or more of the following: campus activities, tribal involvement, community or public service, research.

Course of study and proposed career likely to lead to position where nominee can make significant contributions to the shaping of environmental, tribal public policy, or Native American health care issues, whether through scientific advances, public or political service, or community action.

Leadership, character, desire to make a difference, general well-roundedness.
The 2008 Udall Scholars will be announced on the Foundation's website on April 8, 2008.

This is a great opportunity for several worthy students to receive merit based financial assistance with a relatively small expenditure of effort and time.

American Cancer Society Daffodil Days

STUDENTS, FACULTY AND STAFF ENCOURAGED TO GET INVOLVED IN THE AMERICAN CANCER SOCIETY DAFFODIL DAYS OF INDIANA UNIVERSITY

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – For 35 years, the American Cancer Society has been making a difference in the fight against cancer and providing hope for those facing the disease through its Daffodil Days program. Although Daffodil Days involves offering daffodils every spring to donors in appreciation for their contributions, it is about more than just giving beautiful flowers – it is everyone’s opportunity to share hope for a world free of cancer.

Daffodil Days 2008 is coming to Indiana University the week of March 24, immediately following spring break. The American Cancer Society is looking for volunteers – anyone from students to faculty and staff – to assist in taking daffodil requests during January and February and packing and delivering daffodils during March. To help make a difference in the fight against cancer through Daffodil Days, contact Committee Chair Mary Ann Miller at 855.3810 or mamiller@indiana.edu.

Initial order deadline is Feb. 8, but requests can still be placed until March 14. For a minimal donation, supporters will receive a bunch of fresh-cut daffodils and, more importantly, the knowledge that they are helping defeat cancer. A bunch of 10 fresh-cut daffodils will be available for a donation of $10 or $15 for a bunch and a glass vase. Also available is the Gift of Hope for a donation of $25, which provides a bouquet of flowers anonymously delivered to a cancer patient in the area.

Dollars raised through Daffodil Days enable the Society to offer free programs and services that help people fight cancer with courage and optimism, while providing physical and emotional support and financial information to ease the cancer experience. Additionally, daffodil contributions provide the Society with much-needed dollars to fund groundbreaking cancer research, which happens right here at Indiana University, and by educating people about the importance of cancer prevention and early detection and advocate for meaningful public health policies that benefit the community.

To volunteer for Daffodil Days 2008 or to place your order, please contact Mary Ann Miller at 855.3810 or mamiller@indiana.edu.
