Volunteers Needed for Summer Film

My name is Evan Wan and I am a student here at IUB. I have a film production company in Bloomington called Fool's Paradise Pictures LLC, and we are currently looking for production volunteers for an upcoming full length independent feature film that we are producing in Bloomington over the summer. The film is called 'Petunia' and will be directed by the talented filmmakers Matthew Gordon Levandoski and Clayton Jackson.

I am contacting you because it would be absolutely foolish of me not to inform the tremendous production talent that we have in the Department of Communication and Culture that we are in need of volunteers for production. In addition to be credited (being in the credits for the film), we also offer internship credit through our faculty advisor Caroline Dowd-Higgins for all volunteering students. We have production meetings every Saturday from 2pm-5pm at the Kelley School of Business room 321.

We also have casting calls during the week of April 18th - 22nd for the students in CMCL that are interested. Details about the location, sides for auditions, and how to set up an appointment will be on our website www.foolsparadisepictures.com.

If you could relay this message to the students in your department I would be extremely greatful. Thanks, and if you have any questions you can email me or don't hesitate to call at 312-246-0578.

Best,

Evan Wan

Hungarian Film Series

The Inner Asian and Uralic National Resource Center, in collaboration with the Hungarian Cultural Association and the Russian and East European Institute, is proud to present a Hungarian Film Series for the Spring. We will show one Hungarian film every Thursday evening beginning this week at 7pm in Lindley Hall.

Thursday, March 31st: The Little Valentino—Follow a day in the life of Laszlo, a 20-year-old driver’s assistant who spends his day riding cabs, flirting with ladies, and gambling on pinball games – using the money he’s just stolen.

Thursday, April 7th: Freedom’s Fury—This documentary tells the story of the star of the 1956 Hungarian Olympic waterpolo team, Ervin Zador, who finds himself embroiled in one of the most politicized sports events in history – a match with the Soviet Union that would later be dubbed the “Blood in the Water” match.

Thursday, April 14th: The Prefab People—Renowned Hungarian director Bela Tarr holds a magnifying glass to the marriage of a young working-class couple. The film focuses in on their nuanced relationship and the sparseness of their existence in the wake of an explosive argument.

Thursday, April 21st: Delta—After making a fortune in the city, a young man returns to his isolated village in the Danube delta. His return fractures his family, and he decides to build a house out in the marshes with his half-sister, drawing the disapproval of his family and community. Viewer discretion advised for mature themes.

Information meeting for Rhodes, Marshall, Mitchell and Churchill Scholarships

Please announce to your best and brightest students and encourage them to attend one of two information meetings on for Tuesday, April 5, 12:30-2 p.m. and 3-4:30 p.m., in the Great Room of the Hutton Honors College, 811 E. Seventh, Indiana University, Bloomington, Ind., about the Rhodes, Marshall, Mitchell, and Churchill scholarships and the IU nomination process for each. (There will be another information meeting in early September.) These scholarships support study at one or more British or Irish universities and are among the most prestigious graduate scholarships offered to American students.

The Rhodes, Marshall, Churchill and Mitchell scholarships require candidates to be nominated by their U.S. universities or colleges. To be considered for nomination by Indiana University in fall 2011, an IU student must submit an application to the IU nominating committee by Thursday, Sept. 15, 2011. IU interviews will be scheduled for Monday, Sept. 19, in Bloomington.

The IU committee strongly encourages students who are interested in any of these scholarships to begin working on their applications and talking with potential referees as soon as possible. The IU application consists of a 750-word personal statement, a 500-word statement on the student’s reasons for studying in the UK and/or Ireland, a 500-word statement on the student’s proposed academic program, three references (at least two of which must be from faculty and at least one of which must be from someone familiar with the student’s extracurricular activity and leadership), and a list of activities and honors. (The national applications require additional materials and letters of recommendation.) Students who have any questions regarding the scholarships or possible programs of study, should be encouraged to attend an information meeting or, if they are unable to attend, to contact the chair of the nominating committee, Trevor R. Brown (brownt@indiana.edu), or Edda Callahan, International Affairs, Bryan Hall 104, 855-5021, egcallah@indiana.edu. It is important that students be working on their applications during the spring and summer, well in advance of the IU deadline.

Hoosiers for Peace in the Middle East Film Screening

To See If I'm Smiling
Wednesday, March 30th, 7:30pm
Myers Hall room 130, IU Bloomington Campus, discussion to follow

Please print, post, forward, and otherwise circulate to all who might find this of interest.

"To See If I’m Smiling," documentary, 2007, 59 minutes

Israel is the only country in the world where 18-year-old girls are drafted for compulsory military service. In this award-winning documentary, the frank testimonials of six female Israeli soldiers stationed in Gaza and the West Bank pack a powerful emotional punch. The young women revisit their tours of duty in the occupied territories with surprising honesty and strip bare stereotypes of gender differences in the military. The former soldiers share shocking moments of negligence, flippancy, immaturity and power-tripping as they describe atrocities they witnessed and participated in.

The psychological transformation that these young women underwent as a result of military service is both upsetting and riveting. The culture of war transforms people: personalities change, moral codes are subverted, values are supplanted and masks are constructed to dull the pain of what they did and didn't do in uniform. At a time when women in the military are increasingly on the frontlines, and the actions of soldiers all over the world are being questioned, this powerful film explores the ways that gender, ethics and moral responsibility intersect during war.

Hoosiers for Peace in the Middle East is a group devoted to promoting education, dialog, and action with the goal of achieving a just and lasting peace in the Middle East. While a primary focus of this group is on the situation in Israel, Gaza, and the West Bank, we share an interest in promoting peace in the greater area, including Afghanistan and Iraq.

Holland Award for Exemplary Teaching and Service to Students in the College of Arts and Sciences

We encourage all undergraduate students in the College to nominate a faculty member for the James Philip Holland Award for Exemplary Teaching and Service to Students in the College of Arts and Sciences. The award honors College of Arts and Sciences faculty “who excel at teaching and have a demonstrated history of service to students.” This award is funded by a gift in honor of Professor James Philip Holland, an exceptional educator who gave many years of exemplary service to the students of Indiana University and who earned numerous university-wide teaching awards.

To nominate a College of Arts and Sciences faculty member (AIs are not eligible) for this prestigious award, undergraduate students in the College must send a substantive statement, not to exceed 400 words, detailing the reasons why their professor deserves this award. Please note: only College of Arts and Sciences undergraduate students – not students in other IUB schools and not alumni or graduate students – may nominate College faculty members for this award. The nomination needs to be addressed to Dean Stephen Watt, Associate Dean for Undergraduate Education, College of Arts and Sciences, and sent by 4:00 p.m. on Friday, 1 April 2011, to the Arts and Sciences Undergraduate Education email address of asug@indiana.edu. Students should describe their professor’s outstanding qualities, with whatever supporting information they wish to provide.

Pass/Fail Deadline for Second Eight Week Classes

Friday, March 25th is the last day to sign up to take a second eight week class pass/fail. It is also the last day to file for Extended-X (grade replacement) for courses being re-taken during the second eight weeks. To file for Extended-X, you must go to the College Recorder's Office in Kirkwood Hall 001.

If you are interested in taking a class pass/fail, please stop by my office (in the CMCL building at 800 E. 3rd Street, room 259) so we can complete the required paperwork.

Here is some information about the pass/fail option from the College of Arts and Sciences Bulletin (http://www.indiana.edu/~bulletin/iub/college/2010-2011/policies/academic-policies/pass-fail.shtml): "During their undergraduate program, students in good standing (not on probation) may enroll in a maximum of eight elective courses to be taken with a grade of P (Pass) or F (Fail). The Pass/Fail option is available for a maximum of two courses per academic year, including summer sessions. For the Pass/Fail option, the academic year is defined as beginning with the start of the fall semester and ending with the end of the second summer session. The course selected for Pass/Fail must be an elective (i.e., it cannot fulfill requirements other than the minimum 122 hours required for the degree, but it can be used to meet the requirement for courses at the 300–400 level). It may not be used to satisfy any of the College of Arts and Sciences’ fundamental skills, distribution, Culture Studies, Intensive Writing, or Topics requirements. Nor may it be counted as a part of the student’s concentration area, minor, or certificate program. During the freshman year, students may elect to take activity courses in the School of Health, Physical Education, and Recreation on a Pass/Fail basis in addition to the two other permitted courses."

Online Summer Courses Offered by the Career Development Center

The Career Development Center and Arts & Sciences Career Services office is happy to announce that two of our career courses, ASCS Q294: Basic Career Development and ASCS Q299: Job and Internship Search Strategies for Liberal Arts Students, will now each have one section offered online during the first summer session of 2011. The 2-credit career courses assist freshmen through seniors with career exploration, planning, and development, as well as with job/internship search information and support.

ASCS Q294: Basic Career Development is designed for freshmen and sophomores who are choosing a major or exploring career fields. The course includes three steps for making informed career decisions:
• Self-definition: Explore interests, values, skills, and personality as they relate to careers and occupational environments.
• Structured decision-making: Choose a potential major or career using a systematic method.
• Research in depth: Discover new information about majors and careers and become familiar with campus and community resources.

This course is ideal for students who want to:
• Explore a variety of majors or career choices.
• Better understand how their personality, interests, values, and skills relate to majors and careers.
• Research particular careers or majors in depth.
• Learn a structured, systematic method of career planning.

By the end of this course, students will understand clearly how academic choices relate to career options.

ASCS Q299: Job and Internship Search Strategies for Liberal Arts Students teaches students how to conduct an effective job search. Students learn fundamental skills, including how to:
• Craft a targeted resume outlining relevant skills and qualifications.
• Write about past experiences in a cover letter.
• Apply interviewing strategies to market their skills and experiences.
• Network effectively.

By the end of the course, students will also be able to:
• Analyze how their skills, interests, and values should influence their career decisions.
• Convey the value of their full educational experience to potential employers.
• Find and use the research tools available on campus and online.
• Prepare for a smooth transition from college to postgraduate life.

Regardless of where a student is in their academic or career development, the ASCS courses will provide valuable information that can be drawn upon at any stage in their future. Students can now set themselves apart from the competition, and do it from the convenience of any location. Please contact the Career Development Center at (812) 855-5234, or iucareer@indiana.edu, with any questions you may have.
