Introverts are those of us who gain energy from within ourselves, rather than through the external environment. Because we tend to be more quietly reflective, it can be daunting to engage in networking and interviewing, 2 activities that are essential to a successful job search. Join some Career Development Center staff for a workshop where we will address these issues and strategize for success!

Optician/Technician courses, certificate and A.S. degree

IU School of Optometry

Optician/Technician Program

Two-semester Certificate (29 credits)

or

Two-year Associate of Science Degree (60 credits)

Learn a marketable skill in an exciting health field

in two semesters with an A.S. degree option

Excellent job placement rate and high job satisfaction!

The IU School of Optometry offers an Optician/Technician Program with two options for students. The first is a fast-track that allows a student to earn a Certificate in Optometric Technology/Opticianry in two semesters (29 credits). The second option allows a student to build on a certificate and, with an additional 31 credit hours, earn an Associate of Science degree in Optometric Technology/Opticianry (60 credits). Of those 31 additional credit hours, at least four credit hours must be clinic practicum courses and the remaining 27 may be chosen from allowable general education courses. The general education courses may be completed before or after the Optician/Technician Program courses. For students wanting a four-year degree, some IUB schools/departments accept optician/technician program credits towards a bachelor’s degree.

Here is a great way to “try out” the program… There are three program courses in the Optician/Technician Program open to any interested student. In the fall semester, TOPT-V201 Anatomy and Physiology of the Eye (3 cr) is offered and counts as N&M for the Gen Ed Breadth of Inquiry requirement. Also in the fall, TOPT-V111 Optical Concepts & Properties (3 cr) is offered to interested students. In the spring semester, TOPT-V153 Ophthalmic Dispensing (3 cr) is offered and teaches students a marketable skill.

For more information and application visit our web page: www.optometry.iu.edu

Interested, but still not sure?  Contact Sandi Pickel (pickels@indiana.edu) or Joe Boes (jboes@indiana.edu) to arrange a tour of the optometry clinic and teaching facilities.  IU School of Optometry, 800 E. Atwater Avenue, Bloomington, IN 47405.  Call 812-855-1917 for more information.

RECESS music + ideas festival

Good morning!

We received word of an EXCITING event called RECESS, that is taking place on Monday, April 7th and would like you to announce/blast to your students.

RECESS is a music + ideas festival that brings together successful entrepreneurs, the coolest new startups and the hottest acts in music to inspire the next generation of world changing entrepreneurs.”  RECESS is touring 7 universities and IU was chosen. Mark Cuban is the main investor. The event coordinator, Deuce Thevenow (2011 IU Kelley grad), contacted us in November and I have been advising him on venues, contacts, student clubs, etc. He is working with some others on campus so you may have already heard about this event.

The event is a 4-part experience with one part being a “pitch competition”.  Attached is a 2-slide PowerPoint: please note the 2nd slide that includes info on submitting a “Pitch Idea” (deadline to apply is March 28th). We have posted the pitch idea part on social media and will follow up with another post on the whole event when the students return back next week.  Feel free to share what we used:

·        Pitch a winning idea-win a trip to Las Vegas! IU has been chosen as one of 7 schools to participate in this 4-part event. Submit your idea by March 28th! https://www.younoodle.com/competitions/recess_campus_tour

Looking for an online summer class? POLS-Y 103 Intro to American Politics (June 9-July 3)

Introduction to American Politics (POLS Y103)

Summer 2014

In-Class and On-Line Versions

The Political Science department is offering two sections of Introduction to American Government during the Summer 2014 Session:

·         The first section is a standard face-to-face class during the first 4-week summer session (May 13 – June 6, 12:40 – 2:50 Monday – Friday).

·         The second section is an on-line version of the same class, offered during the second 4-week summer session (June 9 – July 3).  The on-line class is aimed at students who do not plan to stay in Bloomington during the summer; there will be no formal classroom meetings, and all assignments can be completed on-line. Section 9384

In both classes, the central premise is that nothing in politics happens by accident – everything you see is the result of the choices people make.  The goal is to understand American politics by examining these choices and their consequences.  The secondary emphasis is on facts, both to provide basic information about American politics and to demonstrate that there is evidence behind the theories and arguments presented in the class.  The class will be ruthlessly contemporary, emphasizing the political issues, campaigns, and controversies that are part of our everyday life.  The sole text is American Politics Today (third edition), which has been ordered in an on-line version for the entire class.

Both sections IUB GenEd S&H credit COLL (CASE) S&H Breadth of Inquiry credit

For more information on either class, please contact Professor William Bianco, wbianco@indiana.edu.

Summer Course in Telecommunications: TEL T-452 Location Sound

This summer, during the first 6 week session, I'll be teaching a new 3 credit course: TEL T-452 Location Sound. The class is all about capturing good sound while on a shoot, and how to clean up any sound you do capture. I specifically would like to invite CMCL and Journalism students to participate in this class, as I feel like they could stand to benefit just as much as TCOM students. And with the impending M School, I'd like to see the students from the various departments begin getting to know each other.

While many CMCL and Journalism students won't meet the prerequisite listed in OnCourse, I'd be happy to permit them into the class provided they have taken at least an introductory production-track course. There is no expectation of preexisting knowledge about audio or cameras. Graduate students may take the course for credit as well, either under TEL T-452 or TEL T-577.

Thank you and please let me know if you have any questions. You may also give students my contact info if that's easier.

Sincerely,

Josh Sites (sitesj@indiana.edu
