Professional Development & Leadership Opportunity for College of Arts & Sciences Students

Want to develop leadership and networking skills? As part of the College Luminaries Program, you can meet successful IU alumni and learn how to become as successful as they are. Alumni who participated in last year's program:

·  President of Disney Consumer Products

·  Executive Director of NHL Players’ Association

·  Federal Judge nominated by President Obama

The College Luminaries Program is a new student organization from the College of Arts and Sciences looking for motivated student leaders. We aim to invite IU College of Arts & Sciences alumni back to campus every fall for a three-day stay filled with classroom talks, panel discussions, dinners, and other social activities. These alumni, called Luminaries, are exceptional, multifaceted individuals who have reached a high level of success in their professional fields. We hope that these Luminaries will provide mentorship to students by sharing their experiences, giving advice, and offering connections.

The governing body of the program, the Luminaries Program Council, wants to identify 12 Hoosier Hosts - enthusiastic and dedicated student leaders to serve as liaisons to the Luminaries. Hoosier Hosts will accompany these prestigious alumni to and from destinations, as well as attend special events featuring the Luminaries during the program's 3-day event in November. As the Luminaries’ foremost contact, Hoosier Hosts will build important connections with and learn from these professionals who developed their paths for success on the IUB campus. The Hoosier Hosts will play an integral role in the program’s success. All students who have a major or minor in the College of Arts and Sciences are welcome to apply!

If you have any questions, don't hesitate to email us at collegeluminaries@gmail.com. The application is attached and is due on Thursday, February 20th at 11:59 PM.

The College Luminaries Program

The IU College of Arts and Sciences is launching a new initiative called the College Luminaries Program, which is inspired by Purdue’s prestigious Old Masters Program (http://www.purdueoldmasters.org/). The Luminaries Program Council (LPC), the 7 students on the governing body of the program, aims to invite Luminaries back to campus to share advice and experiences with students. Luminaries are alumni of the IU College of Arts & Sciences who have been successful in their professional fields. At the beginning of April, the LPC will select and invite the four Luminaries – one per division of the College: Arts and Humanities, Social and Historical Studies, Natural and Mathematical Sciences, and International Programs – back to campus for a three-day event in October.

Goals

1.      Create a campus environment within the College that allows for student professional development, mentorship and lifelong connections.

2.      Invite IU College of Arts & Sciences alumni and/or friends back to campus for the purpose of sharing personal and professional ideas and experiences with Indiana University students, alumni, faculty and staff to inspire future leaders.

Hoosier Hosts

As the Luminaries’ foremost contact, Hoosier Hosts will build important connections with and learn from exceptional professionals who developed their paths for success on the IUB campus.   In addition, the Hoosier Hosts will have the opportunity to show the Luminaries how IU has grown and share their love for the school. The Hoosier Hosts will play an integral role in the program’s success. Students must have a major or minor in the College of Arts and Sciences to apply.

Time Commitment

Hoosier Hosts must participate in professional development prior to the event, which will entail one meeting per week. Hosts must also be available for the duration of the event November 9-11.

We are looking for more undergraduates to get involved and were hoping you could share the attached information with your students. The Black Sheep - Positions with Student-Run Humor Magazine

(Online) Writers: Each week writers will be asked to submit three short reaction pieces to their Editorial Manager, to be posted on our site. These timely pieces, which offer humorous insight to local news stories relevant to IU students, will be submitted to the campus Editorial Manager for review, feedback and posting.

Social Media Manager: The student working in this position would be asked to run our local Twitter feed. They would be responsible for interacting with students over Twitter, increasing our follower count, and Tweeting humorous quips and links to articles published on our site. They would have weekly benchmarks to hit, both with gaining followers and tweeting.

Advertising Manager: Advertising Managers work with local businesses and our corporate team in Chicago to sign advertising packages with clients. An Advertising Manager is an integral part of this process, describing our business model, how it can help local businesses generate revenue, and closing deals. They are paid a percentage of the advertising revenue they generate.

All of these positions are great ways for students to get hands-on experience with a growing company that understands a student's busy schedule. If you could alert students of these openings, and direct them to the application page below, I would really appreciate it.

Thanks again,

Madeline Rosenthal

8bitfoundation.com Call-out Meeting

Do you read online blogs about video games? Do you aspire to be, or enjoy the notion, of becoming a games journalist? Do you like creating images in PhotoShop, or drawing webcomics on your Wacom tablet? Perhaps 8-bit foundation is for you.

8bitfoundation.com is a website I began in the Summer of 2012. The site is essentially set up in a blog-like fashion, with a heavy emphasis on gaming culture, news, and the creative projects which arise out of the medium. Those who contribute to 8-bit foundation gain a hands-on experience with writing in an editorial format, writing press-releases, and creating their own images. As a website comprised of creative individuals, I pride the domain on being composed of user-generated content.

As an active student at Indiana University, you may have learned about the prospective merger between the school of Telecommunications, Communications & Culture, and Journalism. 8-bit foundation is a valuable chance to exercise the merger of these schools and skills. They are, in fact, very much so a basis of online media creation.

8-bit foundation is not a charity, though many have begun to think so. Think of 8-bit sprites as the ''foundation'' of the current state of games. There you go -- now you've got it! As it stands, there is no direct compensation for your time, though individuals who find writing & creating media to be rewarding are highly encouraged to attend this semester's call-out meeting. No experience is needed, and I provide tutorials for those who need them. On the same token, professionalism and carefully-edited posts are striven for.

If 8-bit foundation sounds up your alley, please attend the call-out meeting this Thursday, January 17th, in HPER 155, at 6 PM. If you have questions about the site, its format, and the content, I highly encourage you to explore 8bitfoundation.com before attending the meeting. If you cannot attend the meeting, or have questions in general, you may contact me via e-mail.

Thanks!

New student website seeking writers, designers (web and graphic), sound and video editors, and gamers

Reader,

First and foremost, I apologize for both the intrusion of your e-mail and inbox.

Video Game-centric club 8-bit foundation is looking to start its first ever Fall 2012 season. Video games, reviews, editorials, comical videos, and more - does this interest you? Webcomics, .gifs, and satirical articles on the latest news - are you intrigued? Writing articles, creating your own videos, pictures, and original content - does this sound appealing? 8-bit foundation is a website about all of these and more - and it needs your help.

Keeping our 8-bit gaming days in mind, 8-bit foundation is all about remembering our roots - but moving forward at the same time. The video game industry is growing each and every year, and with each technological leap, economic expansion, and genre development, there is more and more to talk about. Video games have a huge impact on global culture, breaching geographical boundaries and meshing cultural divides.

So what is 8-bit foundation all about? 8-bit foundation’s angle is to provide alternative entertainment, our take on the latest news, take a stance on video game culture, and maybe bring out some nostalgia along the way. However, making a stance, providing opinions, and generating enough content to keep things fresh is a job for more than just one individual. We need writers, designers (web and graphic), sound and video editors, and gamers who are easy to work with & ready to have a good time.

If you are unsure whether 8-bit foundation is for you or not, you should totally
check out the site - you know, just to make sure. I will be having a call-out meeting on Monday, August 27th, 7 PM, at the Starbucks on Indiana Ave., right outside Sample Gates. It would be awesome if...a) you brought a fully-charged laptop, b) have experience with Adobe Photoshop and/or Wordpress, and c) come regardless of whether you have these items/skills - let's learn together. There will not be pizza and punch, but assuming everything goes well, we will definitely be doing something of the sort in the future. I look forward to meeting everyone on Monday, and until then, don't hesitate to e-mail me with questions (or if you cannot make it).

IU Debate Callout meeting

Dear Students,

The IU competitive debate program is recruiting for the 2012-2013 season. Do you enjoy researching major political controversies, arguing passionately about issues of importance, and honing your public speaking and critical thinking skills? If the answer is yes, then competitive debate is for you!

As active members of our program we will build you into powerful orators and researchers, all while you challenge other Big 10 schools and Ivy League Universities (yes Harvard) in tournament style debates. Shiny trophies may very well be in your future.

This season’s topic will have you engaged in discussions about government restrictions on and incentives for energy production in the United States. Team members will learn about issues such as U.S. oil extraction in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge, tax credits to promote photovoltaic solar panels, and natural gas fracturing restrictions.

Our team is open to all undergraduate students who want to be a part of a competitive team atmosphere. Join us during our callout meetings:

Wednesday August 22 and Wednesday August 29. 7:00-8:30 PM in SPEA 276.  We will provide pizza, while you provide the intellectual energy and drive.

Best wishes,

Brian L. DeLong

IU Ethics Bowl Team - Recruiting new members

The IU Poynter Center is seeking four new members for its undergraduate Ethics Bowl Team. The team, which traditionally includes a mix of majors and years, spends two months analyzing and preparing positions on more than a dozen real-world ethical cases, and then engages rival teams in a regional competition in early November. If they place well enough at the regional level (which they often do), they continue on to the spring competition at the annual meeting of the Association for Practical and Professional Ethics.

Do you know an undergraduate who enjoys lively discussion, analysis, and argumentation, both theoretical and applied? Direct them to read more about the Ethics Bowl Team and how to apply here:
http://poynter.indiana.edu/ethicsbowl.shtml.

The Hutton Honors College will host a mock Ethics Bowl event on the night of Wednesday, August 29. Click here for more details: http://www.indiana.edu/~iubhonor/hdextra/fall12/debate.php
