Urban Education Fellowship for Graduating Seniors

The Great Oaks Tutor Corps is an intense one-year Urban Education Fellowship designed to close the Achievement Gap one student at a time. A highly selective full-time service year for recent college graduates, the Corps members work in a startup charter school on the front lines of education reform in Newark, NJ. The Tutor Corps lets idealistic and dedicated young people invest their time and energy in the success of six middle school students to improve their academic skills while building critical personal relationships with students and families.

Our students’ needs are acute and the effort required is considerable: Corps members work 60-hour weeks, much of that time spent tutoring two or three students. Corps members also take on secondary projects at the school such as coaching teams, leading clubs or assisting teachers and staff. Corps members receive housing in a modern apartment building in downtown Newark, as well as a modest living allowance.

Acceptance into our program is highly competitive. When considering applications, we are looking for a strong academic record, good interpersonal skills and a readiness to rise to the demands that come with working in an urban school.  Above all: A relentless work ethic.  Find more information and apply online at www.greatoakscharter.org
