Establishment of Foreign Language Proficiency for Non-Native Speakers of English

Establishment of Foreign Language Proficiency for Non-Native Speakers of English

Students whose native language is not English may fulfill the foreign language requirement through demonstrated proficiency in their first language.  International students who graduated from a high school that conducted classes in a language other than English may use transcripts, diplomas, national exam results, or leaving certificates issued by the Ministry of Education to establish proficiency. Students must provide official documents and a notarized English translation of them for review by the College before the end of the student’s junior year.   To begin a proficiency review, students should complete the form at http://college.indiana.edu/recorder/forms.shtml and submit it with the pertinent documentation at the College of Arts and Sciences Recorder’s Office, Kirkwood Hall, Room 001.  Students who successfully demonstrate foreign language proficiency will be notified within approximately 14 business days via e-mail.  The College will also notify the Office of the Registrar and the Indiana University Bloomington General Education Program at that time.
