As an introduction to
ethnomusicology, the course is designed for students interested in the study of
music in human life and in cross-cultural approaches to the study of music
around the world. Students will gain a sense of the breadth of the field of
ethnomusicology and learn about different theories and methods for research. We
will explore theories and diverse concepts of music, musical styles and
performance through case studies drawn from different parts of the world.
Students will find opportunities to pursue their interests in particular world
areas (including Bloomington), fieldwork, and topics through research
assignments.
Formal music training is not
required. The course fulfills one of the two 400-level requirements for
Folklore and Ethnomusicology Department majors and minors, although it is open
to students, from freshmen to seniors, from any department.
