Do you
wonder about political gridlock? Do you have concerns about how the U.S.
government functions? This course explores the concepts of debate, dialogue,
conflict and deliberation and the impact on the U.S. democratic system. Through
interactive exercises, case studies and class discussions, students will gain
insight about the essential role of deliberative democracy. In this 8-week
course, students will choose contemporary issues to analyze by exploring the
issue, identifying areas of conflict and finding alternatives to polarized
debate. Throughout the course, students will examine the role of citizen
participation and its potential for strengthening democracy at local, state and
federal levels.
