Great Way to Get Involved on Campus
The Emerging Leaders Toastmaster's Club sponsored by the Office of Mentoring Services and Leadership Development will have its FIRST CALL OUT MEETING for the semester on Monday January 14, 2008 at 7:00 PM in State Room West.
If you haven't come to a meeting before, be sure to not miss this one and discover for yourself if this is an organization that may be beneficial for you. The Toastmaster's Club is a terrific organization that will help you enhance and improve your listening and public speaking skills, speech delivery and leadership development. Commit to your future success by joining us January 14th in the Union for a meeting you won't soon forget.
Included below is a brief description of Toastmaster's International.
What is Toastmasters?
From a humble beginning in 1924 at the YMCA in Santa Ana, California, Toastmasters International has grown to become a world leader in helping people become more competent and comfortable in front of an audience. The nonprofit organization now has nearly 220,000 members in 11,300 clubs in 90 countries, offering a proven – and enjoyable! – way to practice and hone communication and leadership skills.
Most Toastmasters meetings are comprised of approximately 20 people who meet weekly for an hour or two. Participants practice and learn skills by filling a meeting role, ranging from giving a prepared speech or an impromptu one to serving as timer, evaluator or grammarian. There is no instructor; instead, each speech and meeting is critiqued by a member in a positive manner, focusing on what was done right and what could be improved.

RETAIL MANAGEMENT INTERNSHIP Walgreens, the nation's premier retail drugstore, has opportunities nationwide. With 7,000 stores planned by the year 2010, we're creating opportunities for talented, ambitious individuals to be ready to contribute to future success. So, if you're a motivated, enthusiastic, people-oriented person with a knack for organization and who thrives in the fast-paced world of retail management, we want to talk to you. Why Walgreens? Walgreens is America's best-known, largest-volume, most-trusted pharmacy retailer. We lead the U.S. chain drugstore industry in sales, store growth, and profits. We're also one of the nation's largest retailers overall — fourteenth largest to be exact — and one of its most progressive and successful companies. Founded in 1901, Walgreens serves more than 4 million customers daily and each store averages approximately $7.9 million in annual sales. In 2005, sales reached $42.8 billion marking our 31st consecutive year of record sales and earnings. We’re listed among Fortune’s "Most Admired Companies in America" for the 12th straight year and are ranked No. 1 among food and drugstore retailers. Ten weeks that could change your future! At Walgreens, you have the best of both worlds: the training, support and resources of one of America's largest retail organizations behind you, plus the encouragement to be a true entrepreneur. Because we want you to succeed in your retail career, we've created a comprehensive, step-by-step retail management training program that will equip you to become a Walgreens store manager, and from there — depending on your career goals — to move into higher levels of retail management at Walgreens. • The internship program is designed for college students to complete during the summer between their junior and senior years in school, exposes students to management skills and a full range of retail operations at Walgreens. • Interns will work with experienced store managers to learn about store operations, management responsibilities, merchandising, advertising, inventory, bookkeeping, and human resources. • Training includes research projects with on-the-job training. Interns are expected to complete written projects and research topics. • By the end of your ten-week internship, you'll know just what it means to manage a Walgreens store. • It’s also an opportunity for us to seek exceptional students, prior to their senior year of college, to train for future management consideration. Get paid to learn! • The internship is conducted between the months of May through August. • Interns are paid hourly • Rates vary from $12.00 up to $14.00 per hour • Interns are scheduled for 40-hour work week Apply today! Interesting Upper-Level Elective for Spring: Depicting Landscape
FINA U401: Special Topics in Studio Art (3cr.), Section number 28233, Meets M, W, 9:30-10:45, FA 007
"Depicting Landscape" is a new course for students interested in understanding how our contemporary landscape was created. It focuses on streets, roads, and highways, their history, and their social effects on the natural environment and on people's relationships with each other. Students will take a number of field trips, do a number of small projects, and produce, as their final project, an artist's map which both analyzes the landscape and presents it as an aesthetic object. In addition, students will learn Photoshop and GIS (Geographic Information Systems).
The course is taught by faculty member Laurel Cornell, who has a background both in demography and in landscape architecture. She is committed to active learning, to social action, and to enhancing to each student's specific interests, skills, and strengths. The syllabus is posted at Oncourse, or email Professor Cornell at cornell@indiana.edu and she will send you a .pdf of it. Depicting Landscape is a 400-level course (and there is also a graduate section) but no previous background in fine arts is required or expected; even students who are unfamiliar with visual methods of learning can do well in this course.
