Special opera theatre offer for students in Communication and Culture

OFFERING A “FRIDAY SPECIAL” TO
IU COMMUNICATION AND CULTURE STUDENTS
who plan to attend IU Opera Theater’s
new production of
AKHNATEN
an opera by Philip Glass

Enjoy the mesmerizing, spectacular IU Opera Theater production of Philip Glass’ groundbreaking opera "Akhnaten" for just $10 (both Friday performances – Feb 22, or Mar 1,) if you’re a student in the Department of Communication and Culture.

Through his operas, symphonies, compositions, and his wide-ranging collaborations with artists ranging from Twyla Tharp to Allen Ginsberg, Woody Allen to David Bowie, Philip Glass has had an extraordinary and unprecedented impact upon the musical and intellectual life of his times. This will be IU Opera Theater’s first opera by Glass.

"Akhnaten" is based on the life and religious convictions of the Egyptian pharaoh by the same name. According to the composer, the work is the culmination of his two other biographical operas, "Einstein on the Beach" and "Satyagraha," about Mohandas Gandhi. These three people -- Akhnaten, Einstein and Gandhi -- were all driven by an inner vision that altered the age in which they lived, in particular Akhnaten in religion, Einstein in science and Gandhi in politics.

The production’s artistic team is made up of internationally recognized artists: Stage Director Candace Evans, Conductor Arthur Fagen, Set Designer Douglas Fitch, and Costume Designer Linda Pisano.

In all, this is a show not to be missed!

To benefit from the “FIRST FRIDAY SPECIAL,” visit the Musical Arts Center Box Office (M-F, 11:30am-5:30pm), present your student ID and use the code “King Tut!” to buy your tickets.  You’ll be able to buy up to two tickets for any Friday performance (Feb 22 or March 1) for just $10 each!

Seats open 2nd 8 wks: Stand & Fight: Protest movement theories and techniques

Seats are still available in the following GLLC courses:

·         Stand & Fight: (Or Should We Sit?)!:  Theories and Techniques in Protest Movements

ª GLLC-G220 (Course # 30535)  Stand & Fight: (Or Should We Sit?)!:  Theories and Techniques in Protest Movements (3 cr.) (GenEd S&H; CASE S&H) (MW, 5:45-7:45PM, FQ012B)  Brendon Westler

Political protests have seemingly become ubiquitous following the recent economic crisis.  We have seen austerity protests in Greece, demonstrations by Los Indignados in Spain, the Occupy Wall Street movement in the U.S., and the recent “Arab Spring,” amongst others.  The success of such movements remains very much in question.  The fundamental task of this course is to create a conceptual framework within which we may adequately judge contemporaneous protest movements.  In particular, we will engage with texts on political protests written by authors in numerous countries and contexts.  Through such an approach, we will develop an expertise in protest tactics as well as when such tactics succeed and fail.  We will conclude the course by applying our knowledge to contemporary protest movements in order to properly evaluate them.

Seats available 2nd 8 wks: Central European Cinema (SLAV-R353)

SLAV-R 353  Central European Cinema

Black History Month film screening: AT THE RIVER I STAND

Black History Month film screening: AT THE RIVER I STAND

Wednesday, February 13, 7:00 PM

at the Black Film Center/Archive, Wells Library, Room 044B

Associate Professor of History Alex Lichtenstein will introduce the film and lead a discussion following the screening.

Memphis, Spring 1968 marked the dramatic climax of the Civil Rights movement. AT THE RIVER I STAND skillfully reconstructs the two eventful months that transformed a strike by Memphis sanitation workers into a national conflagration, and disentangles the complex historical forces that came together with the inevitability of tragedy at the death of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

This documentary brings into sharp relief issues that have only become more urgent in the intervening years: the connection between economic and civil rights, debates over strategies for change, the demand for full inclusion of African Americans in American life and the fight for dignity for public employees and all working people.

"One of the most clearheaded, evenhanded documentaries about the civil rights movement you'll ever see, and a piece of gripping story-telling as well." -Dallas Observer

Erik Barnouw Award Recipient, Best Documentary, Organization of American Historians

This free screening is part of the Black History Month series at the Black Film Center/Archive, co-sponsored by the Department of African American and African Diaspora Studies, the Department of History, and the Black Law Students Association.

Environmental leadership opportunity

Thanks again for your support of the Greenpeace Semester, Greenpeace’s environmental training program - we're excited to report that the spring term is well underway.

For their orientation the group visited Rockaway, NY, an area hit hard by Hurricane Sandy. They joined Greenpeace staff and local groups providing ongoing relief and through this experience connected climate change and the social impacts of severe weather. Now they are back at our headquarters beginning coursework on the theory of social change and participating in a series of workshops.

Looking forward to our summer and fall terms, we are accepting applications now and want to find the next environmental leaders from your campus and community. We are looking for students who want to:

- Learn the practical skills of environmental activism, effective communication, leadership, and strategic campaigning in a supportive environment
- Travel to witness environmental destruction first hand and put new knowledge to use
- Get necessary experience that can give them a foot in the door to a career in environmental or social change

Will you forward this email to your department or program list or to individual students who are a good fit for the Greenpeace Semester? You can also tell us about great students we should contact at usa-semester@greenpeace.org.

EVENT FOR FACULTY AND ADVISORS: Want to know more about the Greenpeace Semester? We invite you to a brief telephone information session for faculty and advising staff about supporting student development through the Greenpeace Semester. Choose between two sessions offered:
o    Tuesday, March 5th 9 am PST (12pm EST)
o    Wednesday, March 6th 9 am PST (12pm EST)
o    Email usa-semester@greenpeace.org to register for either session
The Greenpeace Semester would not be possible without your support. Thank you for all you do.

Sincerely,

Eli, Mary, Justin, and Myriam - The Greenpeace Semester Team

P.S. Check out this great new video from the fall trip to Portland, OR - we hope it will inspire you as much as it did us.
