Sales Networking Night - January 28th

The Career Development Center and the IU Alumni Association are promoting our upcoming Sales Networking Night taking place on Tuesday, January 28th, from 6:30-8:30pm in the Persimmon Room at the Indiana Memorial Union.

 

This event will provide students the opportunity to learn the art of networking by interacting with professionals within the field of sales.  Guest speakers will participate in a panel discussion, followed by an introduction to networking and a chance for students to mingle with the guest speakers. The panelists will be announced shortly.

 

It would be great if you could pass this information along to interested students. Attached you will find a PDF flier, and printed materials will be sent out shortly. Spring 2014 journalism course of interest to juniors and seniors, with an interest in war journalism

JOUR-J 460, 33200.  Conflict, Terrorism and Humanitarian Intervention. (3 credits)

Meets MW, 11:15 am to 12:30 pm, EP 214. Pre-req is junior or senior standing.

Instructor is Professor Steve Raymer an award winning journalist who has covered conflicts on four continents.

 

J460 is a course about how wars, acts of terrorism, and humanitarian interventions are reported by the global news media.

 

Explores the following topics:

*History of War Correspondents since the ill-fated Charge of the Light Brigade in 1854

*Theory of war as an instrument of foreign policy

*How military operations in Afghanistan and Iraq are covered in this 24/7 world

1. New Website for the Career Development Center and Arts & Sciences Career Services!

 

Beginning October 26

 

In our office's constant effort to innovate how we reach the student population, we are excited to announce the launch of our new website. Although in the past we have combined online resources for the Career Development Center and the Arts and Sciences Career Services, we have decided to separate these two student populations to expand resources for targeted audiences.

 

The Career Development Center website highlights resources and services for new students, exploratory or undeclared majors, and students thinking of changing their current major. The new website can be found at: www.cdc.indiana.edu.

 

The Arts and Sciences Career Services website is geared directly towards students in The College of Arts and Sciences, providing them with resources and services for developing liberal arts careers. The new website can be found at: www.ascs.indiana.edu.

 

Social media sites - such as Twitter (@IUCareers), Facebook (Indiana University-Career Development Center), LinkedIn (Indiana University Career Development Center), and Pinterest (@IUCareers) will continue to serve both the Career Development Center and Arts and Sciences Career Services.

2. Writing, Editing, and Publishing Networking Night

Please join IU Alumni and professionals representing careers in writing, editing, and publishing for an evening of networking and fun. 3. Undergraduate Drop-In Career Advising Hours

 

Starting Monday, August 26th, our drop-in advising hours will be:

Mondays: 9:00 a.m.-12:00 p.m.

Thursdays: 9:00 a.m.- 12:00 p.m.

 

Monday-Friday: 12:30 p.m.-4:00 p.m.

 

Undergraduate drop-in career advising is available without appointment in the Career Development Center, which is located at 625 N. Jordan on the northwest corner of Jordan and 10th. Drop-in sessions last approximately 20 minutes. Career advisors answer general questions about majors or careers; critique resumes and cover letters; explain what resources are available on campus; and get students started on internship, job, and graduate school searches. If additional time is required, the advisor will refer the student to an hour-long advising appointment.

Office of the Vice Provost for Undergraduate Education Fine Art Awards

Undergraduate students pursuing bachelor’s degrees of any major may submit images of up to five pieces of two-dimensional or three-dimensional artistic work completed while attending IU Bloomington from Nov. 1, 2012, to Nov. 15, 2013.

Full competition rules and submission form are available on the Office of the Vice Provost for Undergraduate Education website. The School of Fine Arts Fellowship Committee will adjudicate the awards and select first-, second- and third-place recipients. A piece from each winning artist’s submission will be added to the campus art collection and displayed at IU Bloomington. Scholarships in the amount of $1,000, $500 and $250 will be awarded to the first, second and third winners respectively.

Jane Bosart College Emergency Scholarship

This scholarship was created to provide financial assistance to undergraduate students in the College who encounter a significant financial hardship as they approach graduation that may affect their ability to complete their degree. Applications are reviewed and awards made on a rolling basis. Applications for Fall 2013 will be accepted until Friday, November 15. Applications for Spring 2014 are currently being accepted.

 

Eligibility criteria:

• Indiana resident with a documented financial hardship
• Current full-time status at IUB or in an IU-administered or IU co-sponsored overseas study program
• Minimum College GPA of 2.750 at the time of application and be in good academic standing
• Have completed CASE English Composition, Mathematical Modeling, and Foreign Language requirements
• Be eligible to graduate within three semesters of receiving an award
• Have consulted with Student Central on Union regarding other financial options

2014 Malmberg Scholarship for Study in Sweden

This scholarship is to provide financial assistance to a U.S. resident whose work would be enhanced by study and/or research in Sweden for up to one year. The scholarship is granted for studies pertaining to the applicant’s primary area of interest, with attention to Swedish America and/or the relationship between Sweden and the United States. The project schedule must fall between the dates of June 1, 2014, and August 31, 2015. Project duration depends on the individual proposal (see application). Scholarships are usually granted for a full academic year term (nine months), but can also be awarded shorter periods. Before applying, the applicant must establish contact with a Swedish university or other educational or research institution(s) or organization(s). A letter of invitation or affiliation from the Swedish institution/organization must accompany the application. The award is contingent upon acceptance to the program on which the applicant has based their application.

Overseas Press Club Foundation Scholarships/Internships

Graduate and undergraduate students, studying at American colleges and universities or Americans studying at foreign universities, who aspire to become foreign correspondents, are invited to apply for one of fourteen scholarships/internships to be awarded by the Overseas Press Club Foundation.

 

From among the scholarship winners, the Foundation selects up to nine scholars and pays travel and living expenses for them to intern at foreign bureaus at such leading news organization as the Associated Press, Reuters, GlobalPost and Forbes.  Students win either a $2,000 grant or funding for their overseas experience.   Applicants do not have to be US citizens.

§  500-Word Essay - Applicant’s name and school should appear at the top of each page.  Essay should concentrate on an area of the world/international issue that is in keeping with the applicant’s interest.  It can be in the form of a news story, analysis, or essay.  Recent winners have written on such diverse topics as playing black jack on the Trans-Siberian Railroad, political activism in Morocco, and social upheaval in China.  Applicants are also encouraged to submit essays showing a strong understanding of, or interest in, global economic issues such as trade, finance, emerging markets, immigration or environmental impacts.  While the writing sample need not be new work, it should be submitted in a form that meets the application requirements. The judges respond well to applications showing strong reporting skills, color, and understanding or passion. 

§   Cover Letter - Autobiographical in nature addressing such questions as how the applicant developed an interest in this particular part of the world, or how he or she would use the scholarship to further journalistic ambitions.

 

Winners will be contacted in December so that arrangements can be made for them to attend the Foundation Scholarship Luncheon in February 2014 in New York City at the Foundation's expense.  Recipients are expected to attend.  The results will be posted on the Web site in mid-December.

The Beinecke Scholarship

Beinecke Scholars receive $4,000 immediately prior to entering graduate school and an additional $30,000 while attending graduate school. There are no geographic restrictions on the use of the scholarship, and recipients are allowed to supplement the award with other scholarships, assistantships and research grants. Scholars are encouraged to begin graduated study as soon as possible following graduation from college, and must utilize all of the funding within five years of completion of undergraduate studies. To be eligible to receive a Beinecke Scholarship, a student must be a college junior, a citizen of the United States and have a documented history of receiving need-based financial aid during his or her undergraduate years.

 

Key Eligibility Requirements:

• Demonstrated superior standards of intellectual ability, scholastic achievement and personal promise during his or her undergraduate career.
• Be a college junior pursuing a bachelor's degree during the 2013-2014 academic year. "Junior" means a student who plans to continue full-time undergraduate study and who expects to receive a baccalaureate degree between December 2014 and August 2015.
• Plan to enter a master's or doctoral program in the arts, humanities or social sciences. Students in the social sciences who plan to pursue graduate study in neuroscience should not apply for a Beinecke Scholarship.
• Be a United States citizen or a United States national from American Samoa or the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands.
• Documented history of receiving need-based financial aid during his or her undergraduate years.

Conference Funding:  Up to $500 for Jewish Studies Major, Certificate, and Hebrew Minor Students

The Robert A. and Sandra S. Borns Jewish Studies Program announces conference funding for Jewish Studies major, certificate, and Hebrew minor students for the 2013-14 year. Funding of up to $500 is available to defray the costs associated with attending conferences or extracurricular professional development programs related to Jewish Studies. Students are eligible for one conference funding award per academic year. Funds are limited. Applications will be considered on a first-come, first-served basis.

1)       one page statement describing the conference/program and explaining how it will contribute

Scholarship Opportunity for Undergraduate Women

Calling all techie women!

 

The Center of Excellence for Women in Technology (CEWiT) is proud to announce the Aspirations in Computing Award in recognition of undergraduate women from all disciplines and majors who hope to use technology or computing to advance their careers. Applicants are invited to submit a 500-word essay outlining their future career goals and how they can use technology or computing to make a difference in their chosen field. Applications can be submitted through an online form and are due by December 1, 2013.  Ten women will be selected to receive the $1,000 award. Each winner will be asked to actively engage with the student alliance of CEWiT to promote involvement and success for women in technology on campus or in our outreach programs.  These scholarships are made possible through the generous funding of the IU Women’s Philanthropy Council.

 

How do I apply?

Applications will be accepted until December 1, 2013. Applicants are asked to submit a 500-word essay that describes their future career that will use computing technology to make a difference in any career setting they choose. Fine Art Awards deadline Nov. 15

The Office of the Vice Provost for Undergraduate Education is accepting submissions for the Fine Art Awards, which honor and celebrate undergraduate creative activity. 

Undergraduate students pursuing bachelor’s degrees of any major may submit images of up to five pieces of two-dimensional or three-dimensional artistic work completed while attending IU Bloomington from November 1, 2012 to November 15, 2013.
