Scholars in Global Citizenship (SGCP) 2010 – Class in Spring, 2nd 8 Weeks, international field component in Seoul, South Korea May 12-26, 3 credit hours of SPEA-V 450
“Globalization” – It seems to be one of the newest catchwords in academia and in the professional world, but what does it really mean? Further, how does it relate to your field of study and future professional goals? For the 2010 spring semester, The School of Public and Environmental Affairs (SPEA) is offering a course that addresses these questions in the context of S. Korea. The course combines a second-eight week class with an international module in Seoul, S. Korea for a unique academic experience.

The international field component of this course allows you to explore your area of study using primary source materials, group meetings, lectures and interviews with experts in your field of focus. Because your experience is tailored to your interests, this course is approved for all SPEA majors. Visit the Scholars in Global Citizenship Webpage to learn more, and to apply for the program. The deadline for application is October 15, so please apply soon. Please contact program coordinator Stephanie Lewis with any questions at stelewis@indiana.edu.

IU at Oxford 2010 - July 2–August 1, 6 credit hours of SPEA-V 450
Study governance and decision-making in public and private contexts with SPEA Professor Kenneth Richards and world-renowned Oxford scholars at the University of Oxford Said Business School. Because of the broad applicability of the chosen course topics, this program will be of interest to a variety of majors, including public affairs, business, political science, international studies, economics, history, and more.

Enjoy course-related field trips to London (Parliament, Westminster Abbey, and the Churchill War Rooms); the West Country (Salisbury Cathedral, Stonehenge, and Bath); and Banbury (Plotting Sites for the English Civil War and the Washington ancestral home). Take advantage of optional Oxford field trips to the University’s colleges, the Ashmolean Museum, the Botanic Gardens, and more. Sample a range of ethnic cuisines, including traditional British fare, Lebanese, Japanese, Chinese, Thai, Italian, and Indian. IU SPEA in Pamplona, Spain 2010 – May 24 – June 18, 2010, 6 credit hours of SPEA-V 450/V 550 – Economic Evaluation of Health, Safety and Environmental Technologies (Proposed Program)
Join SPEA’s Dean John Graham and other renowned faculty to study a topic that is both fundamental and timely: the evaluation of health, safety, and environmental technologies and policies. Public demands for new technologies and policies are growing in both Europe and the United States, but the costs of these new initiatives are also a significant concern. Learn how decision makers on both sides of the Atlantic weigh the costs and benefits of new drugs and medical devices for patients, new safety technologies for consumer products, and new pollution-prevention devices for cars and factories. There are no course pre-requisites, classes will include both IU and University of Navarra students, and courses will be taught in English. Accommodations and meals will be provided.

Enjoy three weekday excursions to locations in the ancient and scenic region of Navarra Spain. Plans are also in development for optional excursions, such as field trips to restaurants, museums, plazas, shops, markets, Roman ruins, Medieval buildings, palaces, cathedrals, and other sites of interest. Student travel and exploration are encouraged. Information will be provided for tours to Barcelona and Madrid, and for the famous Festival of San Fermin. Please contact Liz Peck at epeck@indiana.edu for questions. Information will be available soon on the SPEA website.
