What the News Won’t Tell You
A course in media literacy

What the News Won’t Tell You will help students develop basic skills in media literacy. Americans—and especially people of our students’ age—are bombarded with media messages that have been carefully crafted, honed, and delivered. This course will help students understand the intentions behind those messages and the techniques used to make them effective.

This 200-level course is limited to freshmen and sophomores. This course is not recommended for Journalism majors but rather intended to help other students on campus learn to detect, decode, and understand the kinds of messages being placed before them throughout every day of their lives.

Lecture topics will include:
• Advertising
• Public Relations
• Product Placement
• News Values
• The Changing Nature of News
• The Entertainment Industry
• The Media and Body Image
• Talk Radio
• Magazines and Celebrity Culture
• The Reporter’s Real Role
• How the Media Work
• and others.
