2012 MLK Celebration Essay Contest

Living King’s legacy: Meeting the challenges of the 21st century
CALL FOR SUBMISSIONS 2012 MLK Celebration Essay Contest
Deadline November 28th

In his play The Meeting about an imagined conversation between the Reverend Martin Luther King, Jr., and Malcolm X, playwright Jeff Stetson has King advise his compatriot, “Malcolm, don’t ever mistake non-violence for non-action.” King’s point is that much is accomplished for human rights and social justice through peaceful protest and dedicated work. It is through this kind of action today that King’s legacy lives and is lived throughout the world.

The MLK Day Essay Contest Committee, in conjunction with the Office of the Vice President for Diversity, Equity, and Multicultural Affairs (DEMA), invites IUB students to submit an original written or video essay that draws on their experience to respond to this question:

“What non-violent action have you—or someone you admire—taken that exemplifies the idea of “living King’s legacy”?

Successful essays will answer the question, make specific reference not only to the writer’s personal experience and observations, but also to the life, times, and writings of Dr. King.
