Medieval Studies Minor and Certificate

Hello!

I am writing to let you know about the Medieval Studies Institute at Indiana and specifically its resources for undergraduates. The Medieval Studies Institute at Indiana is an interdisciplinary program with an international reputation for excellence. Indiana University has rich resources for the study of medieval history, languages and literature, art, manuscripts, and music. The Institute collaborates with 20 academic departments and programs, as well as the Art Museum, the Lilly Library, and the Early Music Institute.

There are a few reasons we wanted to call your attention to our program. First, we are having an Open House for Undergraduates on Wednesday, October 19, from 4-6pm in Ballantine Hall 004. Students can attend and meet our faculty, explore our courses, find out more about our minor and certificate and our events, and (of course) eat some pizza.

Second, pursuing the 24-credit area certificate (http://www.indiana.edu/~medieval/undergraduate-area-certificate.shtml) does take some work, but it is worth it if your students want to pursue an academic career or work with the medieval period in some other capacity. Indiana is well-esteemed as a center for medieval studies, and we have a combination of resources here that is unmatched nationally.

Finally, and perhaps most importantly, it has come to our attention that many students seem to be graduating as de facto Medieval Studies minors (or nearly so), without ever pursuing the paperwork for the official minor. Because we are so interdisciplinary, and our minor is 15 credits, the History major who takes a Religious Studies class and a year of Latin has probably already fulfilled the requirements for a MEST minor (http://www.indiana.edu/~medieval/undergraduate-minor.shtml).
