Thursday through Sunday next week (February 7-10), the IU
Cinema is showing Christian Petzold’s latest, the GDR drama ‘Barbara.’ The film
has gotten quite some attention also internationally and, I believe, has by now
become the half-official successor of both Good Bye, Lenin! and The
Lives of Others – a really interesting turn in Germany’s public memory of
East German socialism as well as another twist in Petzold’s ever-evolving
oeuvre. I will be doing a brief intro and q+a on Sunday, but the film in itself
is definitively worth seeing, too, on any of the nights!
