Americorps Opportunities in Media Literacy at Home, Inc.

Are you interested in grassroots media activism?
Do you want to serve in a national program for community service?
Would you like to have a strong impact on the lives of inner city youth?

If you answered yes to these questions, think about spending a year teaching media literacy and media production skills to Boston youth. Home, Inc, a media literacy organization that has been working in the Boston Public School System for the last 30 years is seeking Americorps volunteers. We are currently expanding our programs and are seeking 2 Americorps to serve as Media Lab Coordinators.

We are creating Media Labs in several Boston Public Schools and this position will support community involvement in media projects. VISTA would be involved in the following: Helping recruit and retain low-income students at Boston public high schools, establishing a network of teachers, parents and community leaders to support media programs and organizing and overseeing activities at a media lab housed within a Boston public high school. Activities will include running an after school program focused on digital media production for students in grades 9-12. There are also opportunities for the Vista to build organizational capacity through establishing and maintaining a web presence for the organization.

Specific skills required for this VISTA position are video production and editing skills as well as web authoring skills. This full-time VISTA community service position includes a $10,000 living stipend and a $5,000 education scholarship at the end of the assignment. VISTA members are part of AmeriCorps, a network of local, state and national programs that help build capacity at community based organizations in need of assistance.

To learn more about AmeriCorps and VISTA go to the website: www.americorps.org. Though the pay is low, satisfaction is high. You will have a great deal of independence in your work and room for creativity. You will not be bringing people coffee, you will be taking the initiative in media literacy programming at an inner city Boston High School. You will be working with youth, teachers, administrators and parents on creating school curricula. For more info on our program check out our website - www.homeinc.org
