Center on Policy Initiatives’ Students for Economic Justice Program 2011

Organization: The Center on Policy Initiatives (CPI) is a nonprofit research and advocacy center dedicated to the interests of working people in the San Diego region. Through research, community organizing, and effective communications, we seek policy change to promote economic justice and raise workers from poverty to the middle class.

Program: CPI seeks to improve our organizing program by using creative and interactive opportunities to engage students in our work. Trainings and guidance will be provided and will focus on organizing, planning, and implementing campaign strategies.

We are currently seeking unpaid interns, but paid summer internships will be available. Interns will mostly be working with the Organizing Department, but there may be opportunities with our Research and Policy, and Communications Departments.

Responsibilities:

• Participate in campaign organizing efforts to engage new and current supporters.
• Participate in developing a comprehensive strategy to maximize growth of new and current supporters.
• Research and outreach to potential community partners, supporters, and press.
• Summer internships will also involve curriculum centered on basic grassroots organizing skills.

Required Qualifications:

• Passion and interest in social and economic justice issues.
• Proficient editing and writing skills.
• Familiarity with social networking sites (Facebook, Twitter, YouTube).
• Quick learner and interest in organizing.
• Strong sense of ownership over projects and tasks – able to identify new opportunities and have the initiative to pursue them.
• Comfort with and ability to perform in fluid and variable work environments.
