Holland Award for Exemplary Teaching and Service to Students in the College of Arts and Sciences
We encourage all undergraduate students in the College to nominate a faculty member for the James Philip Holland Award for Exemplary Teaching and Service to Students in the College of Arts and Sciences. The award honors College of Arts and Sciences faculty “who excel at teaching and have a demonstrated history of service to students.” This award is funded by a gift in honor of Professor James Philip Holland, an exceptional educator who gave many years of exemplary service to the students of Indiana University and who earned numerous university-wide teaching awards.
To nominate a College of Arts and Sciences faculty member (AIs are not eligible) for this prestigious award, undergraduate students in the College must send a substantive statement, not to exceed 400 words, detailing the reasons why their professor deserves this award. Please note: only College of Arts and Sciences undergraduate students – not students in other IUB schools and not alumni or graduate students – may nominate College faculty members for this award. The nomination needs to be addressed to Dean Stephen Watt, Associate Dean for Undergraduate Education, College of Arts and Sciences, and sent by 4:00 p.m. on Tuesday, March 20, 2012, to the Arts and Sciences Undergraduate Education email address of asug@indiana.edu. Students should describe their professor’s outstanding qualities, with whatever supporting information they wish to provide.

Learn more about Story Play at www.nellweatherwax.com.
Story Play is a fun, exhilarating, exploration of memory, story, metaphor, and play led by master teacher and highly skilled facilitator, Nell Weatherwax (nellweatherwax.com). Gentle, fun, warm-ups and simple exercises are like a sweet recess for your creative inner child. No one is put on the spot. You don't have to be funny, quick or clever to explore the fun of improvisation based on simple memory moments from life. Give yourself a day of rest, play, grounding and creative rejuvenation with a group of playful, like-minded souls. Beginners welcome - no story telling experience necessary. All you need is a desire to play and your sense of humor.
Workshops begin with a gentle, fun physical/vocal/spirit warm-up which leads to simple verbal explorations of memories, dreams, wishes and snapshots. If you feel a desire to express but fear you "have no stories to tell", come find out what a great warm-up and a loving group can do for you as a creative person.
"My favorite part of Nell’s workshops is the invariable sense of safety and warmth she seems to help us, the workshop attendees, attain each time. It’s a fabulous blend of spiritual and physical waking up…" Meryl K., Indiana University Adjunct Professor
"It was exhilarating to be sharing such a personal story while balancing and playing with the energy and story of one other. I also really loved making loud silly noises in a circle of the people. I found the workshop to be a powerful way to tap into my own history and story while being fueled by others." Angela W., Nia Instructo
"I have taken improv classes from Second City, and writing classes at various universities, but I have never learned as much about improvising stories as I have in Nell's workshops. She is that rare genius who can both perform and teach." Barry C. Creative Director, Namedrop, LLC.

New Radio Show Seeks Creative Writers and Sound Artists
American Student Radio, a nationally syndicated radio initiative based at Indiana University, is seeking creative non-fiction writers and sound & music artists for a new show, The Re:Collection. The radio show looks at pieces of art from museums across the nation and finds the story behind it. With the story in hand we tell that story through short, surprising narrative monologues with layers of found sounds (e.g. 1930s radio broadcasts) and music. Our goal is take our audience on mini-audio vacations while creating imaginative interactions between audiences and art.
This is a great opportunity to get professional experience and publish creative work on a national project.
Take a listen to this similar podcast to get a better idea of what we’re doing, and if you’re interested, email Barton Girdwood at bgirdwoo@indiana.edu for more information.
:::Where do you come in?:::
· Creative Non-Fiction Writers: For writers we’re looking for the folks with imagination. Whether you’re a scriptwriter, an essayist, or a big idea dreamer, we can use your help. For each piece we find the story behind the art and figure out ways to take history and relate it to the present in an empathetic and personal way. If you enjoy experimenting with writing and thinking, this is the place for you!
· Sound & Music Artists: For sound & music artists we’re looking for people with sound editing experience (particularly those with experience in Pro Tools or Adobe Audition) or those that are interested in knowing more. This short show is highly produced, meaning we work with multi-layer tracks that blend multiple sounds with one another. For example, we might take an old radio broadcast and blend it with ambient music to produce a certain aesthetic. We love intuitive ideas and creativity. If you’re bold with sound, this is the place for you to experiment.
