FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 6TH is the last day to sign up to take a first eight week class pass/fail.
If you are interested in taking a class pass/fail, please stop by my office (in the CMCL building at 800 E. 3rd Street, room 259) so we can complete the required paperwork.
Here is some information about the pass/fail option from the College of Arts and Sciences Bulletin (http://www.indiana.edu/~bulletin/iub/college/2013-2014/policies/academic-policies/pass-fail.shtml): "During their undergraduate program, students in good standing (not on
probation) may enroll in a maximum of eight elective courses to be taken
with a grade of P (Pass) or F (Fail). The Pass/Fail option is available
for a maximum of two courses per academic year, including summer
sessions. For the Pass/Fail option, the academic year is defined as
beginning with the start of the fall semester and ending with the end of
the second summer session. The course selected for Pass/Fail must be an
elective (i.e., it cannot fulfill requirements other than the minimum
120 hours required for the degree, but it can be used to meet the
requirement for courses at the 300–400 level). It may not be used to
satisfy any of the College of Arts and Sciences Foundations, Intensive Writing, Foreign Language, Breadth of Inquiry, Culture Studies, Public Oral Communication, or Critical Approaches to the Arts and Sciences
requirements. Nor may it be counted as a part of the student’s
concentration area, minor, or certificate program. During the freshman
year, students may elect to take activity courses in the School of
Public Health on a Pass/Fail basis in addition to the two other
permitted courses."

Video For Friendship Study
Stony Brook
University, in cooperation with the NYU Film Department, is holding a nationwide
contest to produce videos depicting vivid friendships between Jews and Muslims.
The videos will be used in a study intended to enhance positive feelings
and reduce anxiety and distrust between Jewish and Muslim college
students.
THERE WILL BE PRIZES OF $2000 FOR FIRST-PLACE AND $1000 FOR SECOND PLACE. THERE ALSO WILL BE FIVE $200 AWARDS FOR SUBMISSIONS THAT RECEIVE HONORABLE MENTION,
GUIDELINES
EACH CONTESTANT MUST SUBMIT TWO VIDEOS:
The first video will depict a friendship between a Muslim and a Jew. The second will show a friendship between two people whose religious identities are not apparent in any way.
The videos should run between two and eight minutes. The main characters may be either two young women or two young men, from 17 to 25 years of age. The plots can be either fictional or based on real-life friendships. The important thing is that the friendships should be vibrant and the plots engaging. Actors should have no foreign accent and there should be no romantic or sexual interest between the friends.
The first video should make the religious affiliation of the friends obvious in some way. It could simply give them first names like Baruch and Muhammad, or recognizable Jewish and Muslim family names. Or something in their conversation or the action of the plot could make their identities plain. If the pair are women, the Muslim's dress could be a good indicator of her identity.
The second video should follow the same guidelines for length, quality, etc. It could involve the same actors or different ones, and the plot and setting should be similar to the first video, if possible. Either way, it should not reveal the religious identities of the friends.
DEADLINE:
THE DEADLINE FOR SUBMISSIONS IS DECEMBER 1, 2013, Videos should be uploaded to YouTube and contestants should email links to Professors Stephen Spector and Arthur Aron at Aron_Spector_Research_Study@stonybrook.edu If you have questions, you may email Professor Aron.

Fall 2013 AMID-C480 1 credit courses (INSIDE THE COLLEGE OF ARTS AND SCIENCES)
I would like to share with you three 1 credit cross-campus
classes offered through the AMID (Apparel Merchandising and Interior Design)
department inside the College of Arts and Sciences available for undergraduates
and graduate students alike. These classes are offered throughout the Fall 2013
semester and have no pre-requisites; students will spend four days in the class
and on Saturday will travel to Columbus, IN. For more information about the
courses please see the course descriptions
below (from http://www.indiana.edu/~iuipe/news/_2013/cross_campus_wksps.php)
Each workshop in the series is an independent, one-credit-hour course executed over four days. The workshops are mutually supportive in their content and approach; however, they are designed to enable students to take one, two, or all three workshops. Graduate students need to enroll in C580 and undergraduates in C480. The workshops are designed for students to work in an individualized manner and receive material on the level appropriate to their program. IUCA+D is part of IU Bloomington. The courses are listed under AMID.
"The Rural Post Industrial" is the first of three workshops offered by IUCA+D / Apparel Merchandising and Interior Design (AMID). The 1-credit-hour course challenges participants to find and explore the connective tissue binding rural and urban worlds and to create modes that speak from a rural landscape to both rural and urban audiences. The workshop is intended to be interdisciplinary and bring in very different perspectives with hopes of providing students with an unpredictable and challenging experience. The goal is "creative abrasion”--the sometimes rough interactions that are needed to spark change and innovation. (No sparks, no fire!) Creative inquiry will be encouraged to explore issues of the Rural Post-Industrial. Students should take the lessons of the course and apply them to their own particular areas of interest.
"Non-Human" is the second workshop in the series. All animals have some relationship with humans such as the active and directed relationship with domesticated livestock; however, even recently discovered animals that live far below the earth’s surface have provided insights into what is required for life and potential healthcare applications. We are always seeking knowledge, hoping for some application in our own lives, and creating potential changes in the lives of non-humans. These desires and our relationship with the non-human is defined most significantly by the challenge of communication. The creatures who lack a voice with which we can directly communicate force us to be creative, inventive, persistent, empathic, and compassionate in order to learn from them. Inevitably, seeking insight into the lives of the non-human brings human existence and relationships into question. Where are the point/s of differentiation and are they fabricated to suit particular purposes or do they fundamentally have meaning?
Charles Darwin asserted that from his experience as a researcher studying a particular animal he would over time attribute its actions to reason rather than instinct. In fact, in recent years Darwin’s observation has been playing out in the larger scientific and academic community about what non-humans are capable of and creating a far richer sense of the animal being than previously thought. Old assumptions are being flushed and new possibilities emerging.
The third and final workshop in the series is "The Fear of Empty Space." Horror Vacui references those moments that snap us into awareness if only for a brief time. We suddenly feel the complexity, power, and impact of seemingly invisible, small scale, emergent phenomena in nature as a pattern takes shape for us. The impact of nature and what we often think are not much more than "raw" materials for our purposes can be experienced as having a capacity and vibrancy that engages us in profound ways. However, we have to unlearn common ways and seek a more meaningful, thoughtful relationship with what Jane Bennet calls "vibrant matter." With this realization, it is hard to be proscriptive or dogmatic about action, inaction, causes, preventions, or solutions. It does compel us to explore, search, and question our relationship with the environment. Also noted by Bennet is the long list of thinkers who understood the need to create the right context in which a moral set of principles can be lived out. Artists also seek to create ways we can better see the hidden patterns, relationships, and significance in our world.
In this third workshop, we will advocate for the vibrancy of matter through creative inquiry. We will focus our inquiry on the "fear of an empty space" or ways in which nature operates and ways in which we have enabled, initiated, fostered, thwarted, challenged, and ignored.
Promotional Video Project- Need help from a student
New Hope Family Shelter is looking for a student to help us
create a promotional video explaining what the shelter does for the community
and how others can get involved. New Hope is the only shelter in Monroe County
that takes in whole families as opposed to only women and children. We would
like the video to show day to day activities at the shelter, as well interviews
with the staff, volunteers, and residents. We are also interested in any
suggestions you may have to make the video great!
If you are interested in working with us on this project or
would just like some more information, please email Megan Gibbons at meggibbo@indiana.edu.

themselves to law enforcement while seeking medical assistance for a
person suffering from an alcohol-related health emergency.
- In order to receive
immunity, the person must demonstrate that they are acting in good faith
by completing ALL of the following:
- Providing their full name any other relevant information requested by law enforcement officers
- Remaining on the scene until law enforcement and emergency medical assistance arrives

September 23-27, 2013, 4:15 to 6:45pm

No prerequisites or previous knowledge required.
Course Description: This intensive one-week introduction to
Indian classical music will be taught by the world-renowned sarod maestro Amjad
Ali Khan, together with his son Ayaan Ali Khan. The course will be highly
interactive in nature, and students will learn the fundamental concepts of Indian
classical music through time- honored traditional methods. Topics will include
the forms of raga (melodic modes) and taal (rhythmic patterns) and how the
practice of composition continually helps to preserve both tradition and
musical technique. Here classical Indian music will be taught fundamentally as
a way of life that is still relevant to the modern world. Students need not
have any prior musical training, although those with expertise in any
instrument may bring that instrument to class with them.
Best wishes,
