PACE—the Political and Civic Engagement program—offers two courses this spring that combine traditional academic and hands-on experiences.
Any student may register for the 1-credit PACE-C 400 Issues Forum on immigration to be held Saturday, Feb. 19.
Freshmen and sophomores are encouraged to consider the PACE-C 211 core course on Making Public Decisions.
Descriptions and further information is below.
PACE-C 211 – Making Public Decisions (3 cr.)
Taxes? Immigration? Climate Change? Same-Sex Marriage? How do decisions on these and countless other major public issues get made in America? This course provides the answers by giving students an interdisciplinary introduction to public decision-making in the United States from the local community to the national capital. Students learn about the role of political institutions and civic organizations such as political parties, faith-based associations, neighborhoods groups, advocacy non-profits, legislatures, courts, administrative bureaus, and the media. They also learn the primary skills needed for effective engagement in political and civic discussion, deliberation, communication, advocacy and action. The course concludes by asking students to make individual and group decisions about a major issue facing Americans today.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
PACE-C 400 Issues Forum (1 credit, or may attend without earning credit)
For Feb. 19, 2011, students have proposed the issue to be discussed – immigration – and are planning the day’s activities to include:
--A panel of experts with different viewpoints with present the issue.
--Students will then discuss in small groups their ideas, values, experiences, and needs related to the topic.
--The small groups will rejoin for a concluding large group deliberation on priorities for action on the issue.
Course objectives: Experience dialogue and deliberation on a complex contemporary issue. Practice community decision-making with multiple perspectives.
This course satisfies the Issues Forum requirement for the PACE certificate and is also open to any interested student.
A preparatory reading and written reflection assignment will be due from students wishing to earn credit or satisfy this requirement before the Forum, and a post-Forum position and reflection paper is also required for the credit.
Students may participate in the Issues Forum without earning credit. Please let us know that you wish to attend.
TEACH FOR AMERICA: DEADLINE APPROACHING
Next Deadline for Teach for America: Friday, December 17th at 12 a.m. EST
By the time they reach fourth grade, children living in low-income communities are already two to three grades behind their higher-income peers, and just half of them will graduate from high school. However, we at Teach for America believe that when these children are provided with high-quality teachers, these numbers can be dramatically different. Therefore, we seek our nation's future leaders - outstanding recent college graduates and professionals from all majors and backgrounds - to commit two years to teach in our lowest-income communities and join a movement to ensure educational opportunity for all.
This year alone, 8200 Teach For America teachers are working to revolutionize the educational opportunities for more than 550,000 students in low-income communities around the country. Additionally, more than 20,000 alumni are currently advocating for these students in fields such as business, law, medicine, and more. Will you be the next leader to join this movement?
Interesting Course for Spring: Global Perspectives on Urban Agriculture & Food Security
Farming the City: Global Perspectives on Urban Agriculture & Food Security
(SPEA E100/V100 Spring 2011)
Course Description:
Feeding the world’s ever-increasing urban populations presents both significant challenges and surprising opportunities. As cities continue to grow, millions of individuals, families, organizations, and governments are turning to forms of urban agriculture to help meet their food security needs. Urban agriculture practices involve the growing, processing, and distribution of food and other products through intensive plant cultivation and animal husbandry in and around cities. From Cuba to Cambodia, from Toronto to Tanzania, well-established forms of urban agriculture now thrive alongside with a range of experimental projects and food security initiatives.
Farming the City examines how urban agriculture can help provide cities with consistent access to a variety of nutritious food sources. The course begins by examining definitions and conceptions of farming from a range of local and global perspectives. Next, students explore case studies that focus on the major benefits and possible risks associated with urban agriculture techniques. Additional cross-cultural comparison is then provided in a second set of case studies from the required textbooks. The course concludes with an examination of major components of the growing urban agriculture movement in the United States with a special emphasis on activities underway in Bloomington and the Midwest. Students will write a final paper that makes cross-cultural or regional linkages between specific urban agriculture techniques that have been presented in the course.
Course Instructor:
Dr. Galuska is an anthropologist, folklorist, and ethnomusicologist. He has directed the Foster International Living-Learning Center on the IUB campus since 2004, www.fin.indiana.edu. His research has focused on Caribbean verbal and musical traditions as well as ecotourism and sustainable agriculture practices. He has taken five groups of IU students to Jamaica as part of an interdisciplinary service-learning course he teaches with a biologist called “Roots, Fruits & Jamaican Ecologies.” He is involved with a variety sustainability projects on campus and local food initiatives through his work as a board member of the Local Growers Guild. Dr. Galuska is also an urban farmer. His family grows fruits and vegetables and raises American Chinchilla rabbits and heritage breed chickens at their 1-acre urban homestead. In addition to urban farming and gardening, he enjoys trail running, hiking, and performance poetry.
TEACH FOR AMERICA: DEADLINE APPROACHING
Next Deadline for Teach for America: Friday, December 17th at 12:00am EST
By the time they reach fourth grade, children living in low-income communities are already two to three grades behind their higher-income peers, and just half of them will graduate from high school. However, we at Teach for America believe that when these children are provided with high-quality teachers, these numbers can be dramatically different. Therefore, we seek our nation's future leaders - outstanding recent college graduates and professionals from all majors and backgrounds - to commit two years to teach in our lowest-income communities and join a movement to ensure educational opportunity for all.
This year alone, 8200 Teach For America teachers are working to revolutionize the educational opportunities for more than 550,000 students in low-income communities around the country. Additionally, more than 20,000 alumni are currently advocating for these students in fields such as business, law, medicine, and more. Will you be the next leader to join this movement?
To apply for Teach for America's December 17th deadline, visit https://www.teachforamerica.org/online/info/index.jsp.
Questions? Contact Lindsey Pittas (lindsey.pittas@teachforamerica.org), recruitment director with Teach For America or visit http://www.teachforamerica.org find out more.
TEACH FOR AMERICA: DEADLINE APPROACHING
Next Deadline for Teach for America: Friday, December 17th at 12:00am EST
By the time they reach fourth grade, children living in low-income communities are already two to three grades behind their higher-income peers, and just half of them will graduate from high school. However, we at Teach for America believe that when these children are provided with high-quality teachers, these numbers can be dramatically different. Therefore, we seek our nation's future leaders - outstanding recent college graduates and professionals from all majors and backgrounds - to commit two years to teach in our lowest-income communities and join a movement to ensure educational opportunity for all.
This year alone, 8200 Teach For America teachers are working to revolutionize the educational opportunities for more than 550,000 students in low-income communities around the country. Additionally, more than 20,000 alumni are currently advocating for these students in fields such as business, law, medicine, and more. Will you be the next leader to join this movement?
To apply for Teach for America's December 17th deadline, visit https://www.teachforamerica.org/online/info/index.jsp.
Sprite Refreshing Films - young filmmaking opportunity
Our program has 3 opportunities for young people to take part:
• 10 filmmakers in each of 6 cities will come together for 1 week of production to cast, produce, shoot and edit a short film starring a celebrity. Ages 13-19, anyone can apply!
• Students from participating universities (Indiana University is one of these) can apply to be INTERNS – and are not intern to the producer, they ARE the PRODUCER, DIRECTOR, TECHNICAL DIRECTOR and BEHIND THE SCENES DOCUMENTARIAN for each set.
• SCREENPLAYS: We are accepting screenplays between 5-15 pages that feature the theme ‘ingenuity takes a refreshing twist, and is rewarded for it.’ Think Ferris Bueller’s Day Off, etc.
What I would love for you to do is send on the link below as an e-Blast to your networks, students, creative young people you know.
APPLICATIONS FOR ALL OF THE ABOVE END NOVEMBER 30th so we are desperately trying to get the word out to as many people as possible, as this is really a great opportunity! Filmmakers don’t have to pay anything to participate, and interns actually get PAID to travel, work and be staff!
Eblasts seem to be a great way to get the word out to students. And so we built one!! Here is a link that you can upload to your email servers: http://www.spriterefreshfilms.com.php5-15.dfw1-2.websitetestlink.com/eblast/sprite2.htm
Our main promotion at the University level has been to find Staff Interns and Screenwriters. That said, anyone 19 or younger can also apply for their chance to be on the film crew. Its an amazing opportunity. You get a very hands-on feel for all aspects of runing a film set. So if you can do a targeted eblast to freshman this would be a great opportunity to promote.
Please let me know if there are any outstanding questions. We look forward to your involvement in spreading the word!
Thank you!
• 10 filmmakers in each of 6 cities will come together for 1 week of production to cast, produce, shoot and edit a short film starring a celebrity. Ages 13-19, anyone can apply!
• Students from participating universities (Indiana University is one of these) can apply to be INTERNS – and are not intern to the producer, they ARE the PRODUCER, DIRECTOR, TECHNICAL DIRECTOR and BEHIND THE SCENES DOCUMENTARIAN for each set.
• SCREENPLAYS: We are accepting screenplays between 5-15 pages that feature the theme ‘ingenuity takes a refreshing twist, and is rewarded for it.’ Think Ferris Bueller’s Day Off, etc.
What I would love for you to do is send on the link below as an e-Blast to your networks, students, creative young people you know.
APPLICATIONS FOR ALL OF THE ABOVE END NOVEMBER 30th so we are desperately trying to get the word out to as many people as possible, as this is really a great opportunity! Filmmakers don’t have to pay anything to participate, and interns actually get PAID to travel, work and be staff!
Eblasts seem to be a great way to get the word out to students. And so we built one!! Here is a link that you can upload to your email servers: http://www.spriterefreshfilms.com.php5-15.dfw1-2.websitetestlink.com/eblast/sprite2.htm
Our main promotion at the University level has been to find Staff Interns and Screenwriters. That said, anyone 19 or younger can also apply for their chance to be on the film crew. Its an amazing opportunity. You get a very hands-on feel for all aspects of runing a film set. So if you can do a targeted eblast to freshman this would be a great opportunity to promote.
Please let me know if there are any outstanding questions. We look forward to your involvement in spreading the word!
Thank you!
Interesting Spring Course: Folk-F253 The Supernatural
Diane Goldstein
Spring 2011
MWF 1:25 pm – 2:15 pm
Course # 28262
Fulfills COLL Social & Historical
Statistics gathered by Gallop Poll together with a variety of other scientific and public opinion surveys indicate that an extremely large percentage of the American and Canadian population not only believe in the supernatural, but in fact, believe that they themselves have had a supernatural or paranormal experience. While most social science disciplines consider supernatural belief to be either historical or marginal, it would seem that a substantial proportion of the North American population, of all ages and social classes, share in these traditions. If this is the case, two questions become enormously important. First, why is it that traditions predicted to decline as scientific rationalism arose, have not? Secondly, why has the extent of belief in the supernatural gone unrecognized and underestimated by the academy for so long? By examining patterns of belief and the features of supernatural folklore, this course will attempt to understand the nature of surviving and declining tradition. The course will focus on the phenomenological features of supernatural traditions; explanatory frameworks and their internal logic; means of developing and maintaining belief; functions and structures of belief traditions; and relationships between genres of belief. The general approach of the course will be ethnographic, focusing on the ethnography of belief systems.
PRIDE VIDEO SHOOT OUT
PRIDE FILM FESTIVAL ENCOURAGES LOCAL FILMMAKERS
BLOOMINGTON, IN– Seven days, one theme, one prop, one line of dialogue, creative people. Results - a three minute film and the warmth and encouragement of your community. The PRIDE VIDEO SHOOT OUT, sponsored by the Bloomington, IN PRIDE Film Festival is an opportunity for lesbian, gay, bi-sexual, transgendered, queer people and their allies to make short videos for presentation at the annual PRIDE Film Festival, Jan 27-29, 2011. All budding filmmakers, goofy hams who like to be in from of a camera, serious investigators of social issues, and groups of friends or families are invited to participate in a short-term, good-natured competition of creative endeavor.
“Last year’s initial Shoot Out was so well received,” says Danielle McClelland, Executive Director of the BCT Management, Inc., the private non-profit that leads a volunteer Steering Committee in planning the Festival each year. “The audience loved the short films that were created, and the experience brought people together in a new way to think and create. We’re really hoping to expand the number of films this year.”
The PRIDE VIDEO SHOOT OUT correlates with the overall theme of the 2011 PRIDE Film Festival, “Family: It’s All Relative”. Filmmakers are encouraged to begin developing ideas around the theme now, but actual filming should not start until the competition commences at the Wed, Jan 19th registration deadline and kick-off event. At the kick-off event, filmmakers will also be given a line of dialogue and a prop that must be included in every film. Completed films will be submitted to the Festival no later than 5pm on Jan 26, and will be shown at the Opening Night Screening of the PRIDE Film Festival at the Buskirk-Chumley Theater on Thursday, Jan 27, 2011. The audience will vote on their favorite film, and the winning film will be announced and shown again on Saturday. Registration for the competition is $10 per team.
Nov. 14-16 Film Series
Dear IU, Bloomington, and regional fans of international cinema:
The DEFA DIALOGUES: 5 Film (Re)Discoveries
kick off on Sunday with:
#1
LOCKED UP TIME (Germany/GDR 1991, Dir. Sibylle Schönemann) this Sunday, November 14, at 3pm in the Whittenberger Auditorium, Indiana Memorial Union @@@@@@@@@@@@
The New York Times called this film about the filmmaker's reckoning with the STASI, East Germany's secret police, who locked her up and expelled her to the West in the 1980s, "an eloquent film that shows what an abstraction like 'politics' did to one woman and her family."
Schönemann was, at the time, one of the very few female directors in the state-run studio system.
At times comical, at times bitter and moving, this fascinating documentary charts Schönemann's quest to overcome her past, the past of a nation that spied on its own citizens...
1991 German Film Award in Silver
1993 New York Film Festival
@@@@@@@@@@@@
Not shown in Bloomington in nearly 20 years, the film will be presented in 35mm and introduced by Helmut Morsbach, the direcor of the Berlin foundation charged with the critical preservation of East Germany's cinematic legacy! The film was re-released in Germany this year.
****************************
# 2
CARBIDE AND SORREL (GDR 1963, Dir. Frank Beyer) on Monday, November 15, at 7pm in the Fine Arts Auditorium 015!
A classic (and rare comedy!) of East German cinema set in 1945!
Starring German acting legend Erwin Geschonneck (Mother Courage and Her Children, Naked Among Wolves, Jacob the Liar) as the nonsmoking worker Kalle, who sets off on an adventure through postwar Germany in search of carbide for a cigarette factory. A popular film in the 1960s, Carbide and Sorrel gave generations of GDR film enthusiasts a pleasurable departure from overt state propaganda. The film will be followed by a Q & A with DEFA 4th generation filmmaker Peter Kahane and RadioEins Berlin star and film journalist Knut Elstermann!!
****************************
# 3
VORSPIEL [Foreplay/Acting/Prelude] (GDR 1987, Dir. Peter Kahane) on Tuesday, November 16, at 7pm in the Fine Arts Auditorium 015!
1980s' youth in the East German provinces. A touching and funny coming- of-age film that will celebrate it's *U.S. PREMIERE* here in Bloomington. The film will be followed by a Q & A with DEFA 4th generation filmmaker Peter Kahane and RadioEins Berlin star and film journalist Knut Elstermann!!
**Subtitled for the first time thanks to the request of Indiana High School Students!!
Interesting Course for Spring: FOLK-F 121: World Arts and Cultures
The Department of Folklore and Ethnomusicology is offering this spring FOLK-F 121 World Arts and Cultures, taught for the first time by the 3-time winner of the IU Trustees Teaching Award, Pravina Shukla. This is an S&H course that may appeal to a wide range of students, but you don’t have to take my word for it…here’s what Professor Shukla has to say about the course:
--------------------------------------------------------------------
FOLK-F 121: World Arts and Cultures
Pravina Shukla
Herman B Wells wanted the world to come to Indiana University, and this course does just that!
Each week the class will take a virtual trip to some part of the world – including the United States – to explore a different manifestation of art and culture through festivals and celebrations, craft, dress, food, pottery, textiles, tattoos, henna, yard art, and much more.
This course will explore traditional arts, looking at different mediums of artistic expression, and how people present themselves as members of groups and as individuals. Throughout the semester, we will seek to understand the myriad ways in which the arts are fundamental to human existence: used as a vehicle for the expression of faith, culture, aesthetics, community, and individuality. No passport required!
CLLC-L 200: WRITING FOOD ACROSS GENRES
28680 12:20P-01:10P MWF ME 008
Three times a day (and usually more), food creates the bond between the individual and the world. We will investigate the ways in which food is written and thought about and what roles it plays in our everyday and literary lives. We will read about food (poetry, nonfiction, fiction) and we will eat food and we will talk to local experts on food.
And we will write about food: stories, poems, and essays, before composing a sustained final project in a single genre. We will consider how to move from inspiration to selecting a genre to work in, and how form affects content. You will receive feedback on how to develop your writing, both from the group and from me. Open to all experience levels—we’re going to learn by doing here. Our shared touchstone will be how to make food a living, dynamic part of our writing practice.
We are in the process of establishing concentrations in Sustainability Science and other fields. Doctoral students can design concentrations as well.
Speaking of sustainability, in 2009, the University of Maine was awarded a $20M EPSCoR grant to found the Sustainability Solutions Initiative (SSI). Bringing together over 15 different disciplines, SSI is designed to produce research in partnership with community stakeholders with the overarching of creating sustainable socio-ecological and economic systems. Professor Laura Lindenfeld, one of our graduate faculty and a member of the Margaret Chase Smith Policy Center, is directing the Knowledge to Action research team on the grant. Communication & Journalism currently has several PhD and Masters students connected with the SSI.
If you are thinking finishing your bachelors and considering graduate school or if you are putting together materials for doctoral programs, please contact me to find more about our program. I happy to chat any time.
REGISTER FOR ASCS Q377: THE ART OF MEANINGFUL WORK
Course Details:
* ASCS Q377: THE ART OF MEANINGFUL WORK
* Monday/Wednesday, 1:00-2:15 p.m.
* Section #30938
ASCS Q377 is for juniors and seniors who are beginning to think about life after college, and for whom finding meaningful work is of the utmost importance.
In the 20th century, the illustrious psychologist and concentration camp survivor Viktor Frankl wrote: "The truth is that as the struggle for survival has subsided, the question has emerged - survival for what? Ever more people today have the means to live, but no meaning to live for." Now, in the rapidly changing world of the 21st century and contemporary issues of economic, social, and environmental concern, most of us would like to find meaning in our work, and the sense that there is a deeper purpose to our lives. Each of us wants to serve the world in our own unique way, and yet it is easy to lose touch, or never really become clear about, what this might mean for us. In this course we will examine the idea that each of us has a "calling" or unique gift to bring into the world. We will ask questions such as:
* What kind of world do I want to live in?
* What are the personal gifts that I can bring into my work, and to others?
* What moves me to want to act?
Through experiential and self-reflective individual and group exercises from a variety of perspectives, you will be challenged to subjectively explore personal issues of meaning and spirituality and to discover your strengths, values, and passions, while objectively exploring topics such as the economic context of work, the environmental crisis and work, and the idea of "right livelihood." The discussion component of this class will be emphasized, and you will be asked to dig deep in order to develop a unique philosophy of meaningful work, and to discover the calling to which you are led.
Q377 is a 3 credit hour, semester-long course offered through the College of Arts and Sciences. It is open to any junior or senior who has not taken ASCS Q294.
