Careers in Community Organizing for Social Justice Available to IU students and alums!
The Direct Action & Research Training (DART) Center will be on the IU campus on Tuesday, February 8 at 6:00pm in Jordan Hall A106 to discuss careers in the field of community organizing with students interested in empowering their communities and working for social change.
Please RSVP if you are interested by contacting Hannah Wittmer at hannah@thedartcenter.org or calling 785.841.2680 with your name, phone #, email address and school.
After years of research into best practices, experimentation, evaluation, and refinement, the Organizers Institute has become THE elite field school in the training of grassroots community organizers in the country.
DART is now accepting applications for the 2011 DART Organizers Institute, the paid, four-month field school for people interested in launching a career in community organizing. Participants will undergo a combined classroom and field training covering such topics as:
* Entering a community
* Identifying and training local leaders
* Strategic planning and issue cutting
* Relationship and community building
* Direct Action on community issues
* Fundraising
The DART Center, has built coalitions throughout the country that have won important victories on a broad set of justice issues including:
* Education reform in low-performing public schools
* Job Training
* Drugs and Violence
* Criminal Recidivism
* Living Wage
* Neighborhood Revitalization
* Predatory Lending
* Affordable Housing, etc.
The DART Organizers Institute combines a 7-day classroom orientation with 15 weeks of infield training at a local grassroots organization and in-field training site. Organizer Trainees are provided with a cost of living stipend and travel. Room, board, and tuition will also be paid by DART during the seven-day classroom training. After successful completion of the program, DART will place graduates into permanent full-time salaried positions earning $30,000-$35,000/year + benefits. DART is a 501(c)(3) organization, therefore, employees of the DART Network are eligible for Public Service Loan Forgiveness under the recently enacted College Cost Reduction and Access Act.
The 7-day classroom orientation and 15-week infield training start in July 2011. Training locations will include placements in several states around the country.
Although it may be helpful, no direct experience is necessary. Organizer Trainees (OTs) hired to participate in the DART Organizers Institute must demonstrate a desire to pursue community organizing as a long-term professional career. A master's degree, JD, or similar life experience is preferred though not necessary. Candidates must have a college degree or be graduating prior to July 2011. Also, candidates must display a workmanlike diligence, be driven to produce sustained results, have proven capacity to build relationships of trust, create and execute a plan, act professionally, feel comfortable working with religious institutions, be accountable and willing to hold others accountable, demonstrate disciplined thought and action, and work in a team setting. OTs must also have access to a car during their training and be flexible regarding relocation. Fluency in Spanish/English is a plus and people of color are encouraged to apply.
Low-moderate income communities across the country are feeling the bite of the recession that began in December 2007. Cutbacks in human services and education, layoffs and persistent unemployment, home foreclosures, increased youth violence, predatory lending, and other serious issues are day-to-day realities for many. Now is the time for a new generation of community organizers to step up, unite people, and transform our communities. DART is recruiting and training that new generation.
To find out more about DART or to apply, we encourage you to contact Hannah Wittmer at hannah@thedartcenter.org or (785) 841-2680. You can download applications or view profiles from previous OTs at the DART website: www.thedartcenter.org.

African Film Series
AFRICAN FILM SERIES
Monroe County Public Library Auditorium
HAVE YOU HEARD FROM JOHANNESBURG?
THURSDAY JANUARY 27, 2011
6:30—8:30 PM
"This is the story of the first-ever inter-national grassroots campaign to success-fully use economic pressure to help bring down a government. Recognizing the apartheid regime's dependence on its financial connections to the West, citi-zens all over the world, from employees of Polaroid to a General Motors direc-tor, from student account-holders in Barclay's Bank to consumers who boy-cott Shell gas, all refuse to let business with South Africa go on as usual. Boy-cotts and divestment campaigns bring the anti-apartheid movement into the lives and communities of people around the world, helping everyday people un-derstand and challenge Western eco-nomic support for apartheid. Faced with attacks at home and growing chaos in South Africa, international companies pull out in a mass exodus, causing a fi-nancial crisis in the now-isolated South Africa and making it clear that the days of the apartheid regime are numbered"

Pass/Fail Deadline for 1st 8 Week and Full Semester Classes
Monday, February 7th is the last day to sign up to take a full-semester class pass/fail. For 1st 8-week classes, the deadline is Tuesday, January 25th.
If you are interested in taking a class pass/fail, please stop by my office (in the CMCL building at 800 E. 3rd Street, room 259) so we can complete the required paperwork.
Here is some information about the pass/fail option from the College of Arts and Sciences Bulletin (http://www.indiana.edu/~bulletin/iub/college/2010-2011/policies/academic-policies/pass-fail.shtml): "During their undergraduate program, students in good standing (not on probation) may enroll in a maximum of eight elective courses to be taken with a grade of P (Pass) or F (Fail). The Pass/Fail option is available for a maximum of two courses per academic year, including summer sessions. For the Pass/Fail option, the academic year is defined as beginning with the start of the fall semester and ending with the end of the second summer session. The course selected for Pass/Fail must be an elective (i.e., it cannot fulfill requirements other than the minimum 122 hours required for the degree, but it can be used to meet the requirement for courses at the 300–400 level). It may not be used to satisfy any of the College of Arts and Sciences’ fundamental skills, distribution, Culture Studies, Intensive Writing, or Topics requirements. Nor may it be counted as a part of the student’s concentration area, minor, or certificate program. During the freshman year, students may elect to take activity courses in the School of Health, Physical Education, and Recreation on a Pass/Fail basis in addition to the two other permitted courses."

Externship Opportunities for Spring Break 2011
The Career Development Center and Arts & Sciences Career Services is excited to announce the 2011 Hoosier Externship Program. This program allows undergraduate students to shadow an employer in order to get a firsthand account of what a given profession is really like and gain insight on future career opportunities.
There are several externships focusing on communications, political/cultural topics, and non-profit operations. Externships will occur over Indiana University’s Spring Break, the week of March 14-18, 2011. The goal of the externship is for students to see what a “day/week in the life” of the sponsor is like and may include observing the host’s typical duties, attending meetings, and assisting with small projects to name a few.
Students can learn more about the opportunities available and apply on our website: https://www.indiana.edu/~career/services/externships
Applications are due on Sunday, February 6 by midnight and include a resume and short statement. Once chosen, newly-matched externs will be required to attend one mandatory orientation session.
