Internship Website: Great for CMCL majors!

Summer internships are just around the corner, and I'm working with an amazing new website called Intern Sushi (www.internsushi.com), which is changing the way interns land internships in the hardest-to-break-into-industries, including Film, TV, Music, Sports, Fashion and Advertising/PR. This month we also launch in Theatre, The Arts, Web, Tech and Publishing.

Intern Sushi combines the social elements of Facebook, with the job board of Monster, and the video content of YouTube to revolutionize the process in which interns search, find, and apply to internships within these selective industries. It is a social media website that allows you to be as picky about internships as you are with picking your sushi!

Companies such as Billboard Music, DreamWorks Animation, The Los Angeles Clippers, Marvel, Martha Stuart Living, Universal Music Group, ID PR, Hearst Magazines, Paramount Pictures, The Mark Gordon Company, and DraftFCB are all hiring interns directly through Intern Sushi!

You can sign up now for FREE at http://www.internsushi.com/.

If you have any questions email me at kfata@indiana.edu.

Have a great week,

Kristen Fata

Pass/Fail Deadline for Full Semester Classes

MONDAY, FEBRUARY 6TH is the last day to sign up to take a full semester class pass/fail.

If you are interested in taking a class pass/fail, please stop by my office (in the CMCL building at 800 E. 3rd Street, room 259) so we can complete the required paperwork. If I am not in my office when you come in, you can also get the form from Amy in room 263.

Here is some information about the pass/fail option from the College of Arts and Sciences Bulletin (http://www.indiana.edu/~bulletin/iub/college/2011-2012/policies/academic-policies/pass-fail.shtml): "During their undergraduate program, students in good standing (not on probation) may enroll in a maximum of eight elective courses to be taken with a grade of P (Pass) or F (Fail). The Pass/Fail option is available for a maximum of two courses per academic year, including summer sessions. For the Pass/Fail option, the academic year is defined as beginning with the start of the fall semester and ending with the end of the second summer session. The course selected for Pass/Fail must be an elective (i.e., it cannot fulfill requirements other than the minimum 122 hours required for the degree, but it can be used to meet the requirement for courses at the 300–400 level). It may not be used to satisfy any of the College of Arts and Sciences Foundations, Intensive Writing, Foreign Language, Breadth of Inquiry, Culture Studies, or Critical Approaches to the Arts and Sciences requirements. Nor may it be counted as a part of the student’s concentration area, minor, or certificate program. During the freshman year, students may elect to take activity courses in the School of Health, Physical Education, and Recreation on a Pass/Fail basis in addition to the two other permitted courses."

At City Year's 21 urban locations across the United States and two international affiliates, teams of trained young people called corps members serve full-time in schools for the academic year as tutors, mentors and role models. By focusing on attendance, behavior and course performance, which identify students who are at risk of dropping out, corps members are uniquely able to help students and schools succeed.

Since 1990, Teach for America has grown to include more than 33,000 corps members (teachers) and alumni. We are now one of the nation's largest providers of teachers for low-income communities and at the same time we are building an ever-expanding force of leaders who work from inside and outside of the education system to ensure that all of our nation's children have the opportunities they deserve.

INDIANAPOLIS TEACHING FELLOWS: ITF is a highly-selective certification program that trains recent college graduates and career professionals to become high-impact teachers in Indianapolis and Northwest Indiana's urban public schools. LAST CALL for applications: ROOTS, FRUITS & JAMAICAN ECOLOGIES (Summer 2012) Recruitment (JAN 30 Application Deadline)

I still have a number of spaces available for the 2012 offering of “Roots, Fruits & Jamaican Ecologies: Permaculture Initiatives in the Blue & John Crown Mountains." This summer will mark the 6th time this interdisciplinary service-learning course has been offered. This 3-credit course is open to both undergraduates (400-level credit) and graduate students (800-level credit). The course will take place during the first 6-weeks of the summer and we will be in Jamaica from approximately May 27-June 10th. While in Jamaica, we engage in cultural, environmental, and agricultural projects as we interact with park rangers, conservationists, farmers, musicians, and other individuals. In addition to the unique service-learning components of the course, this summer’s students will help coordinate an ecotourism fundraising event on the historic Cunha Cunha Maroon Pass Trail. Summer 2012 will also mark Jamaica’s 50th anniversary of independence. Needless to say, this will be a very special offering of “Roots & Fruits”!

Detailed course information is listed below for your reference. The (firm) application deadline is January 30th. Please help me spread the word about the course to your students. Interested students should be instructed to contact me ASAP so I can share more information with them about the course details and application process. Many thanks for your help with my recruitment! This interdisciplinary service-learning course (3-credits, 6-weeks) is a partnership between IU’s Center for Latin American & Caribbean Studies (CLACS), the Jamaica Conservation and Development Trust (JCDT), and the Bowden Pen Farmers' Association (BPFA) in rural eastern Jamaica. Permaculture is a systems-thinking approach to designing productive ways of living for humans while working with and sustaining natural environments. Summer intensive class sessions at IU (Bloomington) will provide students with an understanding of: 1) basic permaculture design principles; 2) cultural practices in rural Jamaican communities; 3) ecological characteristics of mountainous regions in the Caribbean; and 4) the ways in which humans (re)shape local environments through farming and other activities. The seminars given in Jamaica with farmers, conservationists, park rangers, community leaders, herbalists, spiritualists, poets, and musicians, place further emphasis on the ROOTS and the FRUITS of indigenous agricultural, environmental, and cultural practices.

We begin accepting applications on Monday, January 30th, and they are due on Friday, February 17th.

Additional questions and comments can be directed to sustain@indiana.edu.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
About the internship program: The Internship Program in Sustainability uses campus as a living-learning lab, enlisting students as researchers in investigating important questions facing our community, such as:
• How do the ways in which our campus operates and consumes resources affect the social, environmental and economic well being of our community?
• How is our campus’ impact connected to more complicated global issues like climate change, resource scarcity and poverty?
• What opportunities do we have as individuals, institutions, communities, and governments to increase collective social, economic and economic health, and how do we best communicate these opportunities?
• How will we adapt and ensure all people have the ability to thrive in response to dynamic climate conditions and limitations on resources?
Through internships co-mentored by staff in operations and faculty members, interns conduct research and develop programming focused on general sustainability outreach and education or in specific topic areas such as food, transportation or resource use.
Logistics: This summer's program will run from May 14, 2012 to August 3, 2012, and interns are expected to work approximately 20 hours/week in addition to attending a weekly seminar. Interns will be compensated for their time at a rate of $11/hr for graduate students and $9/hr for undergraduates. Though this summer's internship descriptions have not yet been released, students interested in applying may visit http://www.indiana.edu/~sustain/Intern/learn_program.html for more information about the program and examples of past internships.
Get ready to apply: The IU Office of Sustainability (IUOS) will begin accepting applications for its Summer 2012 Internship Program on Monday, January 30, 2012.
