Interesting Course for Spring: INST-I 100 INTRODUCTION TO INDIA

INST-I 100 INTRODUCTION TO INDIA (3 CR)

From Buddhism to Bollywood, Kalidasa to Kashmir, the Bhagavad Gita to Bhopal, and the Indus Valley to IT, we all need to know more about India to function in our globalized environment. I-100 Introduction to India will give you just that: an overview of modern India and a sense of how India became the world power it is today. Each week India Studies faculty (from such departments as Communication and Culture, History, Law, Religious Studies) will give you glimpses of the latest research in their respective fields. Each week we’ll watch a movie chosen to help us build cultural literacy in the region, illustrating that week’s themes. Come learn about India with some of the leading scholars in the country!

JET PROGRAM INFORMATION SESSION

The Japan Exchange and Teaching (JET) Program aims to promote grass roots internationalization at the local level by inviting young overseas graduates to assist in international exchange and foreign language education in local governments, boards of education and elementary, junior and senior high schools throughout Japan. It seeks to foster ties between Japanese citizens (mainly youth) and JET participants at the person-to-person level.

The JET Program enables local authorities (prefectures, designated cities and other municipalities) to employ foreign youth for the purpose of improving foreign language education as well as promoting international exchange at the local level. By teaching foreign languages at schools nationwide and assisting with international exchange activities organized by local authorities, participants engage in international exchange on a variety of levels with local residents. In this way, the Program is expected to increase cross-cultural understanding as well as contribute to internationalization efforts within Japan.

Interesting Service Learning Intensive Writing Course for Spring - ENG W350: Going Public: Writing Health and Health Care in the United State

W350 Advanced Expository Writing

Topic: Going Public: Writing Health and Health Care in the United States
Instructor: Joan Linton

N.B.: This IW course requires students to perform community service (total of 20 hours minimum)

Going Public aims to help students develop as public communicators through a holistic approach to health in the community and a systemic understanding of healthcare in the United States. It invites students to practice and expand the critical skills of synthesis and analysis and rhetorical skills of persuasion through their service, writing, and research in the community. In going beyond the classroom, students will develop the knowledge and understanding needed to address issues of health and healthcare, and find their own voice in communicating this knowledge to public audiences—the very people whose lives are affected by these issues. They will come to understand both the power of language in creating and transforming publics, and the responsibility that comes with any attempt to manage and disseminate information. The long-term goal is to help seed the kind of collective action that will enable individuals and families to co-produce their health within their communities, local and extended, as a key component to improving health and healthcare in the United States.

Readings, discussions, and reflections will emphasize the following areas:
(1) holistic approach to health: not just sickness care but being healthy and staying healthy; not just physical health but also mental, social, behavioral, and environmental wellbeing;
(2) cultural literacy in relocating the self in the community: exploring shared goals, assessing community needs and strengths, building trust and reciprocity, perspective taking
(3) critical literacy: skills of research and analysis and a “systems thinking” approach that takes into account the broader cultural and economic contexts shaping health and care and their local and personal effects
(4) civic engagement: understanding public health as a “commons,” locating collective action in the co-production of health in the community within a democratic process of “polycentric governance”
(5) rhetorical skills and strategies for narrating public stories:
These readings will provide a framework for class discussions and reflections on service-related activities, with a view of creating meaningful and sustainable change within communities.

In addition to performing service, students will collaborate on 3 sets of presentations. In writing assignments, students will: reflect on their service experience in light of ideas from readings and presentations; develop one or more focused messages for their community organization for distribution to targeted audiences; and develop and write up a research project. They will document their journey of going public in stories of self, us, and now. Since this is an Intensive Writing course, peer reviews and revisions will be built into the sequence of assignments. Throughout the semester, students will be assembling their portfolio of writings to be submitted along with the research paper.

"The In/Visibility of America's 21st Century Wars" Presents Dr. Michael Shapiro

On Thursday, October 27,2011 at 7pm in the Fine Arts Auditorium (FA 015), Dr. Michael Shapiro will deliver a lecture, "War and the Arts: A Politics of Aesthetic Subjectivity." This is the second lecture in "The In/Visibility of America's 21st Century Wars" series.

Dr. Shapiro's lecture will be drawn from his current book project, “Studies in Trans-disciplinary Method: After the Aesthetic Turn.” This project’s primary conceptual contribution involves displacing psychological subjects with aesthetic subjects. He discusses a variety of applications, among which are applications to the relationship between the arts and war after 9/11. In those applications his questions have been fourfold: In what sense is contemporary war present (and for whom); what roles does the arts play in that presence, what grammars must we heed to appreciate arts-war-presence relationships, and finally, what is at stake in the ways in which warring violence will have been represented?

"The In/Visibility of America's 21st Century Wars" is a lecture series concerned with the paradox of a highly visualized contemporary American experience of war that is, on the one hand, ubiquitous and utterly present in public, popular culture; and on the other hand, invisible or absent, with no tangible sense that "America" is at war. This series is part of Themester, and is sponsored by the Institute for Advanced Study Remak New Knowledge Seminar, College Arts and Humanities Institute, Office of the Vice Provost for Faculty and Academic Affairs, Cultural Studies Program, and the Departments of Communication and Culture, Gender Studies, and Political Science.

COURSE DESCRIPTION: This discussion based course will explore the interrelationship of gender, sexuality, the college culture, the ways we communicate about sex, and the impact they have on our health.

The course will explore sexual interactions including societal and media messages, gender roles, and gender assigned sexual behavior as they impact physical and emotional health. There will be a focus on gender differences and encounters within the social context that inform sexual behavior and their health consequences.

SPECIFICALLY:
1. How are the decisions we make on a daily basis driven by our perceptions of gender and sexuality?
2. What does it mean to be masculine/feminine?
3. How do we develop our ideas/perceptions of masculinity and femininity?

This course sets the stage for a great clash between ideas that have shaped our modern world. On one side, the side of what has been called the European Enlightenment, are thinkers that have put in question traditional values, be they social, religious, or philosophical, all in the name of a new order based on the principles of fully rational and critical thinking. On the other side, we find the critics and opponents of these rational thinkers. We will be interested in examining the form which this critique of rationality has taken. We will see that these critics of rationality do not oppose it, are not anti-rational or non-rational, but rather drive rationality to its limits. What this means is that if one follows the rules of rationality far enough, one reaches certain limits that result in interrupting rationality itself. We will be interested in the way that works from several different disciplines -- literature, poetry, philosophy, and psychoanalysis -- explore these moments of the interruption of rational thinking, showing that they contain new modes of meaning that were unavailable to the thinkers of the Enlightenment.

Readings include texts by Mendelssohn, Kant, Lessing, Novalis, F. Schlegel, E.T.A. Hoffmann, Nietzsche, Freud, and Kafka, among others.

All readings and discussion in English. Fulfills College A&H requirement. Course may be taken for intensive writing credit (with permission of instructor and the College of Arts and Sciences).

The university’s goal behind this effort was to address this type of behavior by sending a strong message that would remind students that lack of respect towards other human beings through hateful acts would not be tolerated.

Because the original pieces are outdated, COMU would like to encourage students who are interested in joining this effort, to submit relevant drawings that can replace what we currently have. A $100 award for first place, $75 award for second place and $50 award for third place will be given to the best ads.

The committee is looking for art that will carry new ideas, extremely eye-catching and effective at preventing future incidents. The topics can encompass a specific topic (i.e., sexuality, race, religion, etc.) or a broader scope (i.e., diversity, unity, respect, tolerance/acceptance, etc.). The final size of the advertisement will be scaled to ¼ of a page. Art can be in any form that best conveys the notion of OUTRAGED advertisements and the attached samples from the original publication should serve as a point of reference. The committee is confident that with the number of talented students we have at IU, their fresh ideas can produce the type of art that will carry the intended message. We are eager to see those creative ideas!

The first week or so, I listened in on phone conversations where deals were being put together for loans to get an idea of what it sounds like to sell to a borrower or broker. But I also had to learn about the company's lending guidelines and parameters. Also, I looked up properties to see where and how they were located in certain regions all over the country. (ie. growing neighborhoods/cities, average income in area ,value of land in area. etc)

COURSE DESCRIPTION
What are the characteristics of good language learners? This introductory course examines the psychology of language learning, with reference to factors such as personality, language aptitude, motivation, learning styles, learning strategies, anxiety, learner beliefs, age and gender. The study of learner characteristics, or 'individual differences' (IDs), is useful for those specializing in languages, as well as those with apparently lower language aptitude who wish to become more successful language learners. Current research will be presented in accessible and engaging format, so that students with a variety of personal goals can benefit from the latest findings in this expanding area of second language research.

(This class is open to undergraduates only, and is appropriate for students who have studied a foreign/second language for at least two years, not necessarily at the college level.)

Home Movie Day returns to IU

Home Movie Day returns to Indiana University this Saturday October 15, from 3-5 pm at the IU Cinema.

Home Movie Day is an international celebration of the power and meaning of home movies and amateur film. Local members of the community have the opportunity to bring in their home movies and share them with the community. We will be able to screen 8mm, 16mm, DVD, and VHS formats.

This wonderful event highlights the importance of everyday filmmaking as a historical resource. The event is celebrated around the world on this day, so be part of an international movement to recognize these films as valuable examples of local, regional, national and international history.

This year, in conjunction with the move of the event into the wonderful IU Cinema, we will be screening a number of films from various archives on the IU Campus, including the Black Film Center, the Kinsey Institute, and the IU Archives. AIESEC Indiana is offering you the opportunity to find internships abroad! We offer internships for undergraduate students, recent graduates, and graduate students. AIESEC was created to promote unity after international conflicts due to WWII. To achieve unity, we send students abroad on international internships established by local committees in the respective countries. At the same time, our local committee works on creating opportunities here for international students with local corporations. AIESEC works with many large corporations such as Price Waterhouse Coopers, UBS, and Nike. We are the largest student-run organization in the world, and operate in 111 countries with more than 60,000 active members and more than 940,000 alumni. AIESEC offers students the opportunity to be global citizens, to change the world, and to get experience and skills that matter today.

We offer more than 8,500 internships in four areas: Education, Management (Business), Technology, and Development (NGO work, etc.). These internships range from 6 weeks to 18 months, and some of them, mostly Technical and Management, are paid. We are currently looking for students who are willing to leave for this Spring Semester (January-May or longer, 2012). If you are required to have an internship for your degree, if you talk to your advisor it is possible to receive credit for an internship abroad so that you are not missing an entire semester. A representative from The Washington Center for Internships and Academic Seminars in Washington, DC will be on campus Thursday, October 20.The Washington Center is the largest independent, nonprofit academic internship program in the country. It brings together exceptional and dedicated college students and civic, governmental and business leaders, hundreds of colleges and universities, scores of public and private host organizations (or internship sites), and more than 50,000 alumni. Founded 35 years ago, TWC is a unique educational center based on a fully integrated mix of professional experience, academic coursework and real-life challenges.

The Washington Center offers two types of programs:

Internships: Semester or summer-long integrated academic and work experiences in government, corporations and nonprofit organizations. Each internship is tailored to provide meaningful work experiences that will enhance students' resumes and help launch their careers. Most internships are in Washington, D.C., but there are also opportunities abroad in London, England and Sydney, Australia. Additionally, students take academic courses and attend special programming during their time at The Washington Center.

Academic Seminars: These intensive learning experiences focused on specific topics, such as National Security, the Presidency and the Middle East Peace Process. Past seminars have included visits to such locations as Capitol Hill, CNN, the Newseum, embassies and many others. Seminar events have featured such respected speakers as Ted Koppel, Discovery Channel; Andrea Mitchell, NBC News; Governor Howard Dean, Chairman of the Democratic National Committee; and others.

The information session will be an opportunity to get in depth information about the programs available as well as a Q&A opportunity for students to have direct access to a Washington Center Representative.

How would you like to go to the Super Bowl this year? It may be easier than you think.

Join Total Venue Control by selling souvenir merchandise at the Super Bowl at Lucas Oil Stadium on February 5, 2012, and you can be part of the biggest day in professional football. You will be part of a large team of people selling all of the licensed merchandise at the actual venue. On October 19, Total Venue Control will hold 30-minute information sessions the Career Development Center to discuss the details of what will happen during the day-of operations.

To participate, you will need to do the following:

1) Contact Jeremy Harmon at jeharmon@indiana.edu to obtain documents that will need to be filled prior to the information sessions on October 19.
2) RSVP to attend one of the information session on October 19. If you are not registered, you will not be admitted to a session.

This position will build your interpersonal, organization, and communication skills. It will also give you experience in creative problem solving and deadlines and a general boost toy our resume. Although this will not take up much time each week, it is important that our Contributing Editor is committed as they will be a huge asset to The Odyssey, the Publisher, and the Managing Editor.
